Stories About
Hymns You Know
When I Survey the
Wonderous Cross
See, from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Some consider this the greatest hymn in
the language, surpassing all others in sol-
emn beauty and intense sorrow. Written by
Isaac Watts, the father of English hymnody,.
who said "It was not my design to exalt
myself to the rank and glory poets, but I
was ambitious to be a servant to the
churches, and a helper to the joy of the
lowest Christian.
