Philosophers have written big
thick books with small print to de-
fine life. I’ve read some of them
and after wading through their
technical garble, 1 was more con-
fused after finishing the books than
at the beginning.
One thing we know: life is very
complex. It involves today, tomor-
row, working, buying, selling, get-
ting, losing, going here and going
there. Whew! That makes me dizzy
thinking about it. I’m going to have
jet lag before I finish this article.
We also know that life is a se-
ries of contradictions: being bom
and dying, planting and plucking,

war and peace, justice and injus-
tice. Intelligent people have tried to
reconcile these contradictions since
the beginning of time, but they re-
main just as confusing as ever.
Because of the complexities and
contradictions, life passes swiftly.
Job, a wise man of ancient times,
describes the swiftness of life as a
"cloud that soon vanishes, a
shadow that appears for a little
time, and like a flower that blooms
and then is cut down."
Our lives are like "warp speed"
compared to the people in Job’s day
who traveled by walking, slow
camels, or small sailboats. No
wonder we suffer with anxieties,
high blood pressure, and ingrown
toenails.
We count our years at each
birthday. The Bible tells us to
number our days because life is so
brief. The Psalmist wrote, "So
teach us to number our days, that
we may gain a hear of wisdom"
(Psalm 90:12).
Learning to live one day at a
time strength for living in a com-
plex, busy world.

Each year I begin stressing
hunting safety long before the deer
hunting season begins. I always
pray that we can make it through
the season without any serious in-
juries or deaths. We all however,
know that accidents can happen if
proper hunter safety precautions
are not taken. We investigate all in-
cidents that involve shootings, ac-
cidental or otherwise.
The thoroughness of our inves-
tigation is, in no way, a reflection
on any of the parties involved. It is
just good law enforcement practice
to make a detailed investigation of
all incidents that result in a death,
or injury, regardless of whether or
not it initially appears to be an ac-
cident. By the same token, the Dis-
trict Attorney normally presents all
such cases to a Grand Jury, so that
several persons will hear all details
of the case and make the final de-
termination. Of course, hind-sight
has always been the best sight, and
I can think of so many ways a
tragic situation could have been
prevented.
In the Peace Officers’ Hunting
Club we are all required to wear
something of a bright orange color.
We also only hunt from permanent
deer stands that are built up off the
ground. In addition, we sign in and
out so everyone will know who is
in the club at all times. These are
just a few of the things we do in
order to provide safety for every-
one concerned.
However, as cautions as we may
be, there is always the chance that
some type of accident can happen
because some accidents are just
that - accidents. Alcohol and
loaded guns should never be used
together. Orange hunting vests are
invaluable especially, when
walking to and from the deer stand.
There is no four legged animal in
the woods that has orange fur, so
don’t shoot anything orange. Proper
gun safety is vital. Every year
numerous people are killed or
injured with "unloaded" guns.
It is my sincere wish that every
hunter has an enjoyable and safe
season in the woods and I hope you
get the trophy you want.
I still want to encourage each of
you to be as careful as possible
during the remaining weeks of the
hunting season. When you stop to
consider that every move you make
when hunting could seriously affect
the life of your friends, family
