To the citizens of Panola County Pct 2
I, Debbie Sharp Bennett, would like to announce my candidacy in the
Democratic Primary for the Panola County Commissioner of Pct 2.
My husband, Donald R. Bennett, is the owner of Donny Bennett Cabinet Shop.
We have seven children in our lives and eight grandbabies. We have made our
home in Beckville for several years, owning our own home there and working on
the renovation of one of the town’s most historic homes.
I am the daughter of Alice “Al” Maurine Sanders Sharp and Excellsor Lindquest
“Excell” Sharp and have three siblings, Lynn Sharp of Corpus dhristi, Sandra
Sharp East and Johnny Wade Sharp, both of Beckville..
The Sharp side of my family settled in Pct 2 in 1871. Three past generations of
Sharp’s, Richard Vastine and his wife Eliza Jane Hodge; John Thomas, “Mr.
Johnny” and his wives Kate, Julia and Eva Hill; and my father. Excell, are buried •
in Youngblood Cemetery. My maternal grandparents, William Wade Sanders and
his wife Carrie Barton, also rest on that hill. Other family names are Craig,
Tompkins, Cassity, Allison and Wyatt.
Leaving Panola County for thirty years to live in thP'big city of Houston, I
worked my way through a man’s world in a two billion dollar customer-driven cor-
poration. Becoming one of the first female outside salespersons, I continued my
career into branch management, one of three women managers out of forty five
branches. The last budget I managed in Houston was forty two million and the
responsibility for the bottom line on profit and loss was mine. I have years of
experience in solving problems and management of personnel, projects and
finances. .
While I enjoyed my years in Houston, I was always reminded of the better qual-
ity of life available in Panola County, so I returned home. I now have a sign on my
front door that states “Life is too short to live in Houston”.
For .the past six years, I have had the pleasure to work for Blazer Construction.
We build roads from scratch. I manage the Carthage office and know the job and
the equipment are only as good as the operators doing the work. The county
employs many qualified operators an|d drivers. The commissioner’s job is to direct
where the work is needed on the miles of county roads and allocate the budget
accordingly. Each commissioner selects a qualified person as foreman and the
actual day-to-day operations on the roads are led by the foreman.
Having knowledge that a D4 is a dress dozer and a D6 means destruction, .the
usage of a backhoe vs. track hoe, a sheepfoot vs. smooth drum compactor, a mixer
or cutter, a grad-all, motor grader (blade, maintainer), standard culvert sizes, I
understand the process necessary to build and maintain our roads. I know that a
road is only as good as its base, culverts must be set properly and kept cleaned out
so that our roads drain properly. Ditches must be constantly maintained to prevent
damage to the road surface, dangerous pooling of water in the roadway and to pre-
vent damage to homeowners’ properties.
I invite you to visit the following website for a listing of responsibilities of your
commissioner. The most visible job of a commissioner is the building and main-
tenance of our roads. What most people don’t realize is the importance of the
Commissioners’ Court in their control of our county tax money. The 2009 County
budget was $ 18,142.144.00. Amounts like this certainly require diligence in the
management of those funds, plus verification that all expenditures are in strict
compliance with the law.
www.county.org/counties/desc_office/commiss.asp
I see you, the tax payer, as the county's customer.
and I seek your support and --
“It’s more than roads and bridges. It’sTOUR taxes.”
