Sales tax rebates to Panola
County municipalities during the
first nine months of 1995 are up 6.8
percent over rebates issued through
October of last year.
The statistics, released Monday
by Slate Comptroller John Sharp,
show that while rebates to the City
of Beckville are down slightly for
the year, refunds to Carthage con-
tinue to grow.
Carthage was issued a check for
$73,895.03 for the city’s percentage
of sales taxes collected in Septem-

Medical College in Dallas. (

the United States Army under the
Delayed Enlistment Program at the
U.S. Army Recruiting Station, El
Paso, Texas.
The Delayed Enlistment Pro-
gram gives young men or women
the opportunity to delay enlistment
into the Army for up to one year
before reporting to basic military
training.
Thompson, a 1993 graduate of
Carthage High School, will report
to Fort Benning, Ga., for ministry
basic training Nov. 13,1995.
He is the son of John R. Thomp-
son of El Paso, and Rebecca S.
Wameke of Carthage.

RUTH GILL JACOBS
1928-1995
Graveside services for Mrs.
Ruth Gill Jacobs, 67, of Garland,
formerly of Carthage were held at 1
p.m. Saturday, October 21, 1995 at
Oddellows Cemetery. Hie Rev.
James Davis officiated. Arrange-
ments were under the direction of
Jimerson Funeral Home of
Carthage. Mrs. Jacobs died Thurs-
day, October 19, in a Garland hos-
pital.
Bom on Sept. 21,1928 in Royce
City, Texas, she was the daughter
of Robert Allen and Margaret Car-
oline Gill. The family moved to
Carthage in February of 1934
where Mrs. Jacobs graduated from
Carthage High School, and
attended Baylor University in
Waco. On August 14, 1948 she
married James Byron Jacobs in
Carthage. They have lived in
Garland for 18 years. Mrs. Jacobs
was preceded in death by a
daughter, Mrs. Theresa Wigington.
Mrs. Jacobs is survived by her
husband, Mr. James Byron Jacobs
of Garland; three daughters and
sons-in-law, Jena and Richard
Bayliss, and Penny and Roy Har-
bour, all of Broken Bow, Okla., and
Vicky and Robert Duckworth of
Celeste. Texas; two sisters, Mrs.
EDWARD DOWNING
1940-1995
Funeral services for Mr. Edward
Downing, 55, of Tyler, will be held
at 3 pan. Wednesday, October 18,
1995 at Hawthorn Funeral Home
Chapel in Carthage. The Rev.
Richard Boone will officiate. In-
terment will follow in Murvaul
Cemetery in Panola County. Ar-
rangements will be under the di-
rection of Hawthorn Funeral Home.
Mr. Downing died Monday, Octo-
ber 16, at East Texas Medical
Center in Tyler.
Bom on May 31, 1940 in Gary,
he was the son of Eva Britton and
Albert Lee Downing. Mr. Downing
was of the Baptist faith, and had
lived the past 35 years in Tyler. He
was an electrical contractor and had
served in the United States Army.
Mr. Downing is survived by his

1912-1995
Graveside services for Mrs.
Cozette Hearne, 83, of Carthage
were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oc-
tober 21, 1995 at Oddfellows
Cemetery in Carthage. Bro. Bernie
Tiede officiated. Arrangements
were under the direction of
Hawthorn Funeral Home of
Carthage. Mrs. Hearne died Friday,
October 20, at her residence.
Bom on June 1, 1912 in Panola
County, she was a homemaker, and
had lived most of her life in Panola
County. Mrs. Hearne was a mem-
ber of the Baptist church.
Mrs. Hearne is survived by her
husband, Mr. Joe Hearne of
Carthage; one son, Robert Clarke
of Nashville, Tenn.; six grandchil-
dren.

First United Methodist Church. In
addition to regular business, the
members were entertained by the
showstoppers from Rowe Per-
forming Arts. The girls gave a mu-
sical presentation saluting Irving
Berlin.

were delightful and greatly appre-
ciated by the music club members.
