Dear Folks:
I found my trip to the

United States. They are
properly called Soviets.
In the Soviet Union, just as
in the United States, there
are problems ■ some common
to both nations, others very
different. They are just as
interested in attacking and
solving their problems as we
are. Finally, I am convinced
that they are just as inter-
ested in peaceful coexistence
as we are.
I think it is time we each
stop the political campaign
and start solving our prob-
lems. Increased trade will
help solve problems in both
countries. We need their >
market: they need our pro-
ducts. -Besides, nations that
are dependent upon each
’other for trade are less
likely to shoot at each other
during differences of opi-
nions.
Our greatest hurdle will be
in trying to make two very
different governmental sys-
tems interface with each
other. As a beginning, each
must first learn and under-
stand the other’s system of
government.
That understanding must
come from an honest and
factual study, not from the
rhetoric of a political or
propaganda campaign.
In my work as a member of
the House Committee on
International Cooperation in
Science and Space. I shall be
dedicating my efforts to-
ward this goal.

1973 season.

FLAGS will be open
Saturdays and Sundays
from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The

effect through December 2.
All the more than 95 rides,
shows and attractions at
SIX FLAGS will be in full

Marked changes in land-
scape will give SIX FLAGS

same as a political race in
the United States.
During the campaign each
political candidate stirs
everyone up with dire
warnings of disasters that
will occur unless you vote
him into office.
During past years, the US
and USSR have been acting
just like ca'-di'1. *es. Each
has been telling their own
constituents .usua ;v out of
context) about how bad the
other's system of govern-
ment was, coupled with
ominous warnings Of disas-
trous events.
As in th* case of political
races, after the smoke of the
campaign cleared away, the
world and the government
continued to function irres-
pective of which candidate
was elected. This is also the
case with the US/USSR
relations. Each has a viable
governmental system that
works quite well for their
respective people.
Let it be clearly under
stood, I would not recom-
mend any part of the Soviet
System for this country. I
think ours is a far better
type of government for
Americans.
On the other hand, they
picked their form of govern-
ment: they like their form of
government; and their form
of government is working
for them. As far as I am
concerned, as long as.each
stays in his own backyard, it
is none of our business how
they run their government
and visa versa.
The most startling fact of
life became immediately
obvious to me the moment I
set foot on Soviet soil: “I did
not really know or under-
stand, academically and
factually, the Soviet sys-
tem of government". Fur-

average Soviet citizen did
not know or understand
ours.
Just as in political cam-
paigns, we have each been
listening only to what our
candidate had been saying
about his opponent. We had
not bothered to check for
ourselves. We each tried to
judge the other according to
our own standards, which is
like trying to measure tire
pressure with a yardstick.
As an example, I quickly
learned that one does not
refer to citizens of the Soviet
Union as “Russians” any
more than one refers to all
