Howard Paint team
— Champions!
The champions of the eight
and nine year old division of the
Sanger summer league is
"Howard Paint." The members of
the team from left to right are:
Coach Buddy Howard. Steve
Stogsdill. William LeGear. Travis
Harden. Callan Dietz, and
Wesley Sanders. Not pictured
are: cannon Karchaske, Justin
Engler, and Coach Brad Howard.
The team had an undefeated
season, 12-0. This qualifies
them to participate in the
district tournament to be held in
Lewisville July 24-27. Coach
Howard drafted three players
from other Sanger teams in their
division to accompany them to
the tournament. These players
are: Woody Lewis. Justin
McGuffin and Nathan Sprabary.
New basketball team,
"the North Texas Stars
Mrs. Carolyn Franklin Engllsh/drama teacher from
Slidell rounded up area basketball players about a month
ago to participate in the Basketball Congress
International Whataburger Southwest Shootout at
Corpus Christi July 9-11. 1989. The team did not
practice together once before the tournament. The team
was called the North Texas Stars. The team members
wore their school numbers on their blue and white
jerseys, and brought home second place trophy.
The purpose of the tournament is to give college scouts
an opportunity to view upperclassmen athletes for
recruiting purposes. There were 16 teams competing and
some from as far away as Colorado. Colorado was
favored and had a tall team, the majority over six foot
tall. Defending champion Victoria #1 was defeated by
Round Rock #1 which then was pitted against the North
Texas Stars for the championship game.
July 10, North Texas stomped White Oak 71-31, July 11.
Corpus Christi #2 was beaten 68-50. July 12 Corpus
Christi#! was gunned down 76-66. The North Texas
Stars were unbeaten going into the championship game.
The championship game had Round Rock #1 coming out
with first place 81 to 53 with North Texas placing second.
The North Texas team played well but had a problem
sinking the baskets.
The North Texas Stars was made up of the following
athletes (included are their total points in the four
games): Susie Anderson, Ponder 21 points. Stacy
Franklin. Slidell 12. Jennifer McLaughlin. Valley View
54. Brandee Rabe. Lewisville 53, Kristi Shults.
Forrestburg 15, Elizabeth Trietsch, Sanger 31. D ann
Watson, Frisco 53. Rhonda Wilson, Slidell 12, and
Shannon Wilson. Slidell 19 points. Rhonda Wilson saw
action for the first time since having foot surgery in
March. She played very well.
Area teams make State Top Five
Carroll In the playoffs.
Southlake returns 30 lettermen with 4 offensive and 6
defensive lettermen. But they must replace their all-state
backfield of Uldrlch, Walker and Blanchard. They have
several all-district lineman returning including Marty
Dunbar. 240 lbs., Ellis Howard. 245 lbs. and Brandon
Murdoch, 250 lbs. The Dragons are loaded, when you play
in 15 runaway games you get to play a lot of people and
Carroll has experienced people at every position.
Coppell, the fastest growing school In the district, lost
heavily to graduation but as usual they will probably have
several transfers Into their football program.
Lake Dallas slipped to 6-4 last year from their 8-2 mark
of 1987 but the Falcons program has been established and
will once again be even with Coppell.
Coach Ivy at Sanger must find some players, he returns
some good defensive help but must rebuild an offense that
never left the ground last year.
Whitesboro went 0-10 last year and to hope for a better
record in 1989 could be a pipe dream.
It's a long way to December, but the winner of District
9-AAA should be the state champion.

Sanger's new head football coach James Ivy
has announced the Sanger Indians 1989
football schedule, and it’s a toughie.
The rebuilding Indians will hold pre-season
scrimages with Callisburg and Pilot Point.
Callisburg will have a big, big team that
should be In the district playoffs. The
Wildcats have 9 returning starters on offense
including 285 lb. Ricky Moore and 255 lb.
Clint Phelps. Halfback Kyle Miller. 6-1, 205
returns. Miller had 884 yards rushing last
year and the other returning halfback, Ken
Ing had 985 yards rushing. Sanger will host
the Wildcats August 25th.
On September 1 the Indians travel to Pilot
Point in the Lake Ray Roberts Classic. The
Bearcats return junior Ely Sledge who will be
the best back Sanger will face all year. Shane
Blagg returns at the other running back slot,
Blagg gained 1,177 yards last year. The
Bearcats are once again loaded and headed
for a state championship.
The Indians host Class AAAA Northwest on
September 8. the Texans went 4-3-3 last year
with one of those ties to Sanger but the
Texans are ready to challenge for district
honors this year. The Texans will have 8
returning offensive starters including
running back Scott Simms and QB Russell
Phillips. Phillips was the class 5-AAAA
Soph of the Year last year and his twin
brother Michael rushed for 555 yards in
1988.
On September 15 the Indians travel to Lake
Worth for one of the few games In which will
be rated a "toss-up." The Bullfrogs have 8
starters back on offense and 10 on defensive.
Running back Mohammed McDonald should
be one of the best backs In the Indians will
face in 1989.
The Indians lost to Farmersville last year in
somewhat of a upset, but the Farmers ended
the season 11-1. The Farmers have running
back Kevin Emeory returning for his Junior
year. Emeory is called by head coach Jim
Wood as "the finest back I've ever coached."
The Indians will host the Farmers September
22.
The Indians host old foe G.A. Moore and his
Celina rowdies on September 29. Celina went
13-2 last year. A normal year for Moore. Only
3 starters return on defense and no one on
offense but G.A. will find some players before
September.
Sanger travels to Princeton on October 6 to
meet the district 10-AAA cellar dwellers. The
Panthers were 1-9 last year and rebuilding is
in order. This should be an even match.
The Indians will need a breather because on
October 13 they meet the rowdy Gainesville
Leopards. On October 20 the Indians host
Whitesboro in a Homecoming match before
traveling to Southlake Carroll on October 27.
The Indians' November schedule is easier
with a trip to Lake Dallas and a season finale
at home against Coppell's Cowboys.
Coach James Ivy and his staff have their
work cut out for them

When James Ivey took over the reins of the Sanger
football program in May he knew he faced a challenge, but
it may be a bigger challenge than he expected. Texas
Football, the Bible of Texas high school football has
picked two members of district 9-AAA in the Top Five in
the state.
Gainesville's Leopards have been picked as the number 1
team in the state and defending state champion Southlake
Carroll has earned the number 5 rating.
Southlake Carroll breezed to a 16-0 record last year with
their only close contest a 14-13 win over Gainesville. In
the 6 playoff games Southlake scored 240 point to their
opponents 33.
Gainesville returns only 7 lettermen but three are
backfield starters. The Lome brothers, Donald and
Ronald return at the running back slots alone with
quarterback Chris Lewis. In the line they have several
kids over 200 pounds Including 215 lb. Sidney Evans. 240
lb. Jerrod Long and 235 lb. Corey Huddelston. Gainesville
had the best talent in the district last year and only a lack
of discipline kept them from a second meeting with
