Bo Cooper told me Tuesday that his family has moved to
Denton and he would probably go out for football at
Denton High School next Monday.
That blows all my theories out the window. Denton runs
a run-oriented offense and it may be hard for Bo to crack
the starting lineup. If they need a designated passer,
though, they have a dandy. Best 6? luck to Bo.

The City of Sanger is having budget problems, but
Mayor Nel Armstrong told me Tuesday that the electric
department revenue was helping the City face the budget
crisis.
Monday night I had the opportunity to watch the Sanger
firemen in action. While standing there in the light rain,
trying to get a few photos of a family’s misfortune, I
paused to think, “what possesses these firemen to
volunteer for this job?”
It’s hard to figure, three Sanger firemen were overcome
by the heat and smoke, other firemen probably felt the
smoke later in the night as they tried to rest.
They were probably on the scene of the fire for 90
minutes before soft drinks arrived. One of the firemen
was so sick that Gatorade came up as soon as it went
down.
When the first fireman arrived, they said they heard
ammunition going off in the garage where it was stored.
Not a pretty picture. But if you live in the Sanger fire
department area, then those guys look pretty good when
fire or any emergency arises.
I don’t wear a hat, so I can’t take my hat off to them, but
I know I join everyone in the community in saying,
’’thanks” to true volunteers who put their life on the line.
A mixed group, young and old, of professionals and
blue-collar workers, they are all business when it comes
to putting out a fire.
Thank you.
Maybe that may be the solution - vote people out of
office that can’t handle something as important as Flow -
but again, how does Flow get three votes on this
Commnssioners Court? There might be a way - have you
got a crystal ball?

I grip about my property taxes but mine seem small
compared to the property taxes in Keller that Affiliated
Food Stores pay. Their giant warehouse is in Keller and
they have already paid 8699,185.44 in property taxes
and the appraisal district has said that they now owe
8325,659.29 more.
Can you imagine one company paying 1 million dollars a
year for property taxes?

IMB says they are moving 700 more employees into
their new facility in Southlake. Initial employement
figures were announced as 2,000 but now its 2,700.

Despite tales of woe the metroplex economy is far from
dead. I was in California two weeks ago and folks there
think Dallas and Houston have dried up and gone away.
Real estate in the metroplex and Denton county areas
may be the biggest bargain in America.

The hospital tax district election has been over long
enough to make some cool reflections as to where to go
with a publically funded hospital. First thing you must
consider is that Denton County voters don’t want public
funds or at least tax funds to support a hospital. The
Commissioners Court knows this and the City’s gesture to
give the County its interest in Flow, with reservations,
will be refused. So where will the next move to keep Flow
open come from?
*****
City of Denton residents gave Flow a fairly good vote;
therefore, it would appear that the next move would be
for the County to return the City’s gesture and give its
interest in Flow to the City. It’s apparent that the huge
majority of Denton County residents perceive of Flow
being a city hospital. Under the law, the County will still
be responsible for indigent care. However, the County
wouldn’t have to use Flow exclusively for indigent care,
but whereever patients are admitted, it would relieve from
the indigent care drain from Flow.
*****
This sounds like a reasonable proposal, but will the
County make the offer? The answer is probably not. They
want to sell Flow. A majority of the Court wants the sale
proceeds to spend
• • • • •
Well - if the County won’t accept the City’s offer with
strings attached and if the County won’t turn Flow over to
the City, what now?
Another election could be held in twelve months for
another hospital tax district with a 10 cent tax limit.
However, it is very doubtful that the southern part of the
County will even do this. Also remember the northern part
of the County (Krum, Sanger, Pilot Point, and Aubrey)
voted as strongly against the tax district as did the
southern part. Central Denton County also voted strongly
against the tax district. Therefore, it is logical to believe
the City of Denton is the only way Flow can turn.
*****
Let’s assume Flow’s solutions so far have found no
home...perhaps the County and the City might go back to
leasing Flow to a non-profit corporation. This nearly
happened last year...it is still a viable solution...maybe
not all Flow wants but something’s got to be found to
stop the big loss each year and to keep Flow open.
*****
One fact stands out in the whole picture and that is that
Flow has a very good operating structure now. The whole
problem Flow is having is simply one where the City and
County have not funded Flow the way they promised.
Denton is looking at a 827 million budget this year. The
City’s budget is much bigger. Two cents from each budget
would keep Flow in business. Now that is not that much. I
would have little impact on the amount of taxes. Sure 2
cents is not all Flow wants, but it’s enough to keep Flow
open.
*****
Lawsuits may enter the picture and it is very likely to do
just this if the City and County can’t give and take enough
to provide Flow with Continuiung life. Neither the County
nor the City can aell Flow without the coneent of the
other.
Now, where can either go? Maybe they could agree to
close Flow. That would be absolutely the last solution and
one that neither City nor County can handle politically.
