The season ended too quickly. The Indians were
awesome in their last two games. Friday night, Sanger’s
receiving corps made some fantastic catches in the foggy,
wet Falcon stadium.
Jason Morris made his usual sideline miracle catches,
Sean thomas and Rich Briner made some great short
catches but the most improved receiver of the second
part of the season, Lupe Olivarez, made some spectacular
catches and did some great running after catching the
ball.
They all graduate ... the 87 Indians will start over next
year with a 2,500 yard plus quarterback, Bo Cooper, and
only two part-time receivers, Ray Escabedo and Andy
Garza. The Indians' offensive line loses Doug Johnson,
Craig Adkins, Scott Langley and Mark Turpin. Only
newcomer Craig Johnson returns.
The defense returns two starters. Glen Stogsdill and
Jimmy Whaley, reserves Jimmy Coin. John Briner. Tony
Vega and Blake Lemons. There are 10 returning
lettermen for 1987.
Southlake Carroll returns nearly everyone except a
quarterback. Springtown was also a young team. Lake
Dallas loses only 6 players and the Falcons could be tough
next year.
Sanger’s cupboard isn't exactly bare. The JV and
Freshmen had good players who wil have to play big roles
for the Indians next year.

It may have been the longest football ever played in
Denton County, 3*/« hours after it began, 96 passes later
and 72 points later. Sanger finished the season by
defeating Lake Dallas, 42 30. It wasn’t that close ... the
Indians built a 36 8 lead at halftime and could have made
it more in the second half.
Bo Cooper rewrote the record books by hitting 25 of 50
passes for 405 yards. That brought his total passing yards
to 2,584, breaking Larry Tidwell’s 1970 passing record.
Sanger gave Lake Dallas good field possession all night
long, every kickoff was an onside kick. Lake Dallas took
the ball to start the game and ran out of downs on the
Sanger 23 yard line. After two incomplete passes, Cooper
passed to Jason Morris on the right sideline, Morris went
for an apparent touchdown but stepped out of bounds at
the Falcon 43 yard line. The Indians drive stalled at that
point and a punt gave Lake Dallas possession at the 10
yard line.
Lake Dallas could not move the ball and punted to the
35 yard line. Two plays later, Cooper hit Lupe Olivarez
for 35 yards for the first touchdown with 6:19 left in the
first quarter. The extra point try was no good.
Lake Dallas took over on their 43 yard line, but couldn’t
stop the Indian defense led by Craig Adkins. On a fake
punt on 4th down, Adkins dropped Bill Anderson at the
38 yard line.
Cooper ran a quarterback sneak for 26 yards, then two
plays later, ran 17 yards for the touchdown. Sean Thomas
passed to Ray Escobedo for the two point conversion to
make the score 14-0.
Tony Vega recovered a fumble at the Falcon 46 yard
line to set up the next Indian touchdown. Cooper passed
to Olivarez for 13 yards, passed to Sean Thomas for 9
yards, and then passed to Thomas to the two yard line.
Andy Garza scored from two yards away to make it 20-0.
Jason Morris ran an end around for two points and a 24 0
Sanger lead.
Lake Dallas scored next after Anderson passed to Mike
Andrews for 16 yards, followed by a roughing the passer
call. John Gustafason scored from 11 yards away to make
it 24-6. Anderson passed to Mike Scroggins for the two
pointer and the score was 24-8 with 10:19 left in the
second quarter.
On the next Indian drive, they nearly found touchdown
heaven again. Cooper passed to Rich Briner for 16 yards.
Then he passed to Lupe Olivarez forlU yards. Cooper ran
a QB sneak for 10 yards, but the drive stalled on the
Falcons 8 yard line.
After a long Falcon drive stalled, the Indians drove to
pay dirt. Bo passed to Lupe Olivarez for 13 yards and
then threw a touchdown pass to Jason Morris for 57
yards to make the score 29 9.
The Indians scored again right before the halftime.
With Sean Thomas making a great one handed catch on
the 15 yard line, it set up a 14 yard Cooper to Morris catch
on the left side to make it 36-8 at halftime.
Lake Dallas stopped the first two Indian drives in the
second half and then drove 88 yards in 12 plays for a
touchdown. Anderson passed to Gustafson for 11 yards to
make the score 36 16 with 2:37 left in the third quarter.
The Indians failed to move on their next possession and
then John Briner intercepted a Williams pass to give the
Indians possession at the Falcon 42 yard line.
Cooper passed to Morris for 13 yards, ran a QB sneak
for 15 yards and then passed to Lupe Olivarez for the
final Indian touchdown. This was all before the third
quarter ended, giving Sanger a 42-16 lead.
In the 4th period, Sanger couldn’t take advantage of an
interception by Andy Garza at the 37 yard line. A drive
failed and the Falcons went 37 yards in the plays for their
next touchdown.
Bill Anderson executed a nifty 18 yard bootleg play,
then Mike Scroggins scored from 1 yard away to make
the score 42 22 with 5:35 left in the game.
The final five minutes took 30 minutes. Despite good
running by Jimmy Coin, the Indians drive stalled and
Lake Dallas scored on their final possession of the night
with John Gustafson scoring from 3 yards away to make
it 42 28. Scroggins caught a two point conversion to make
it 42 30.
The Indians had 20 first downs to 17 for Lake Dallas.
They had 99 yards rushing and 416 yards passing. Lake
Dallas had 127 yards rushing and 235 yards passing. Lake
Dallas quarterback, Anderson, hit 12 of 42.
The Indians had 10 penalties for 95 yards, a 31.6
punting average and gave the ball to Lake Dallas at
midfield on each kickoff.
