were expected be filed against
Leon Bennett Phillips, 19, of
Carlton in county court today

the American hostages does
not constitute an advantage
for Iran. In fact, it constitutes
a weakness because it inhibits
us from acting, on the in-

climate for an independent
national policy with Europe
and all those (countries) in the
world that are not under the
influence of a superpower.’’

Among the team members
reportedly aboard was Tom
“Sarge" Johnson of In-
dianapolis, coach of the AAU’s
national team and former
trainer of the 1976 American
Olympic team, which won five
gold medals.
A spokesman at LOT offices
in New York said the plane
carried 22 members of the
team, but a spokesman had
said earlier that 23 members
were aboard, as well as “one
or two other Americans.” At

mph.
Erath County sheriff’s
deputy Bill Crouch took up the
chase on hiway 281 toward
Hico but lost the suspect when
his car was damaged in the
chase. The deputy’s vehicle
was damaged when he ran
into the back of the supect’s
car. According to Crouch,
chase speeds were between
100 and 110 mph.
Daniel’s report on the in-
cident cited “suspicious
behaviour” as reason for
stopping the vehicle.
Stephenville officers have
been taking additional
precautions lately, due to a
Iran’s position weakened by hostage crisis
running for the 270 seats,
eliminating all but a
maximum of 540 on the first
ballot could keep sizable
segments of the population,
from being represented.
Bani-Sadr told the state
radio he visited various
polling stations in Tehran and
that certain individuals were
forcing people to vote for
specific candidates. He also
spoke of the U.S. Embassy
captives, telling the Tehran
correspondent of the French
newspaper Le Figaro:
Iran’s ruling Revolutionary
Council, dominated by the
politically conservative
Moslem clergy, chose a two-
stage election procedure
opposed by moderates,
liberals, leftists and
autonomy-minded ethnic
minorities. In districts where
no candidate wins a majority
in the voting today, the two
candidates with the largest
totals will oppose each other in
a runoff April 4.
Bani-Sadr and other critics
of the system contended that
