several friends who had previous
ly complimented me. in trying to
Improve the living conditions of
our; city by getting through such
an alley irt that block" And here's
what we saw, this thin paste-
board wax pencilled notice mea-
suring about 8 inches by 6 in-
ches and reading “81000 damages
done to the City of Hallettsville
by cutting heautifui shade tree
here.”
Now, I do ndt know who you
are. Who was the author and’ the
«*, prognosticator of this act* Who
are you? What are you trying to
stir tip? To me this locks kinds,,
like a black-hand notice. Are you
just naturally against me on gen-
eral principles, and against this
full-sized, public double alley pro-
ject merely because it is an ef-
fort of mine? Are you trying to
get somebody else to bring it
against \ me instead of doing it
yourself? Are you the one who
said that Scott Hill must have
done something awfully bad and
tje is trying to cover up by giving
the • city this property. Is this
the way you do people over in
Hallettsville who are trying as
hard as they can to make Halletts
vllle a better place in which to
live?
Now if you will have the loca-
tion of this former tree (I sup-
pose you would call it a catalpal
surveyed you will likely find that
it was on the line of the City’s'
public alley property and the pri-
vate property to the north belong
Ing to everybody’s friend, Ernst
Neuhaus, but mostly on the City's
property as the uncovered stump
will likely show. This tree was
apparently a volunteer that had
come up at the back of the back-
Mbuse and leaned over the city’s
Kbllc alley property narrowing
He free passage Of ‘ truck*
much that an effort had been
previously made to pull up an
anchored vzhite post alley found-
ry line fnarker opposite the tree.
Months ago I asked our mayor
if he would, have that obstruction
removed by our city clean up
squad. He spid "Yes”. (The city
clean up squad reports directly
to the mayor instead of reporting
to one or more of our aidermen.
But it seems the squad could not
jget at the job at this time. Last
Monday a week ago I phoned our
mayor stating that J had a good
workman for the day, and asked
if I might have the tree removed i
anti cut up so the clean up squad

It mighter have pushed the toilet

la Claus* had em.”
Some Other property owners in
this block want this full-sized pub
lie double alley so much that they
have .offered to give the city their
11 feet of land on their side or
the. division line, just as soon as
adl others will coins across and
<lo the saihe thing, thereby mak-
ing the alley 22 feet wide. Qthgrf
