the refugees.
All troops crossing the frontier +in
the Goumois region of the northern
Jura still had their arms. Their re-
tieat from the Maginot line was
forced when advancing nazi columns
cut them off from the French army
in the south ,
So far, however, there were no in-
dications of a general collapse or
flight of the main French armies
[driven south of the Jura. Only a
I handful of soldier-refugees crossed
1 the frontier in thp Geneva[area.
As seen fioin Switzerland tonight
real military picture in Fance
one of the stangest in history.
Really there were three separate
French lines.
The southernmost line was the
Franco-Italian front along the Alps.
There the Italians appeared to

Next was the "front" created hy
deep thrusts of the German niotor-
■ ized units into France. Tire farthest
south of these thrusts was at Lyon,
where a few thousand German motor-
ized soldiers camped in the streets.
The city had been handl’d over to
.them without resistance hut it was
still surrounded hy comparatively
fresh well-armed French troops.

40.000 REFUGEE ALLIED
SOLDIERS IN SWITZERLAND
Chan. E. Stokes, II. P.
J. F. Gilbert, Sec’d
Geneva, June 20.—Foreign troops
poured into neutral Switzerland to-
day but not as invaders.
They were allied soldiers coming
as refugees, many wounded by Hiti-
ler's onrushing armies in France.
It was officially estimated late to-
day that some 40,000 men, mostly
French anil Polish soldiers with a
scattering of foreign legionnaires,
had been disarmed by Swiss troops
after crossing the frontier near Gou-
mois. The weary trek of defeated
men continued, with many thousands
still pressing toward Switzerland and
safety.
More than 16,000 Poles who had
hoped to win victory for their own
invaded country by helping to drive
