The MESSAGE

BALFOUR DECLARATION
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED

ditional Judaism. His vast learning,
his staunch loyalty to the faith of
our fathers, and his kindly and
understanding heart represent Ju-

his daughter and all the Greenfields
continue to stand for the best and
the noblest in Jewish tradition and
in modern Jewish living.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS . . .
(Continued from Page 1, Col. 3)
7. Debating Society will be coached by
Mr. Melvin Dow. Great things are expect-
ed from this group.
8. Athletic Association will be guided
by the versatile Al Schlosser. Intramural
contests as well as inter - institutional
leagues are planned.
9. Palestine Song and Dance Club. We
are fortunate to have in our community
two young Palestinians, who recently ar-
rived in Houston to study medicine. Am-
non Cohen, ad Dov Grejzer will teach our
boys and girls Palestinian songs and
dances.
Next Sunday, November 2, will be 30
years since that fateful day when Lord
Arthur James Balfour, then Foreign Min-
ister of the British Empire, issued the
famous document which will always be
known by his name. It pledged his great
democracy to facilitate the building of
a Jewish National Home in Palestine.
Much water has flowed under the
bridge since that historic moment, and
today our people stand on the threshhold
of a Jewish State in the land of our
fathers. The hopes and dreams of 2,000
years are about to come true.
Indeed, it is also another anniversary,
for fifty years ago, the first Zionist Con-
gress met in the city of Basle, Switzer-
land and formulated the famous program
which will always be known by the name
of that quaint Swiss city, the program
which pledged the Zionist movement
to win for the Jewish people “a publicly
recognized and legally assured home in
Palestine.”
It will be, in many ways, an historic
week-end and Beth Yeshurun proposes
to celebrate it fittingly. On Friday even-
ing, October 31, we shall have a Zionist
service to which will be invited all the
members of all Zionist groups in our city
as well as the entire Jewish community.
The subject of Rabbi Malev’s discourse
will be “Palestine—Where Years Are
Centuries.” A special Palestine musical
program is being arranged by Cantor
Javna and the Beth Yeshurun choir.
A special Palestine broadcast will be
heard over Station KTRH at 10:30 a. m.
as the “Voice of Beth Yeshurun.” The
assembly program for the Sunday School
on Sunday morning, at 11:30 will also
deal with the ancient but ever youthful
land of our fathers.
We are privileged to be alive in an
historic moment in the annals of our
people. Let us be conscious of it and let
us mark it with fitting celebration this
next week-end.

THOU ART THE MAN . . .

ren and grandchildren ask, he must be in
a position to say to them with a clear
conscience that he was not a slacker, that
he did not cheat or short-change his own
Jewish community and his own religion,
that he did not sell Judaism short.
In the course of this campaign, we ex-
pect to ask every Jew in our community
to do his full duty towards the magnifi-
cent structure that will stand for the hon-
or and prestige of the Jew in Houston.
But whether we get to you or not, we
know that everyone who respects his peo-
ple, who reveres his religion, and who
cherishes the dignity and honor of Is-
rael, will give in generous proportion to
the grandeur of the cause, and the glory
of the Jewish future in our great and
growing city.
We are making every effort to give
you the best service possible. Records are
being brought up to date and improved
systems are being inaugurated in line
with our policy to give better service as
Beth Yeshurun grows larger.
Although we are a spiritual organization
we are still i

It would help us greatly to help you
if you would inform the office immedi-
ately whenever a correction should be
made in a Yahrzeit date, address, or any
other matter.
However, you can readily see that your
making a suggestion or a complaint to a
brother member will not help us to help
you. We are responsible only for those
criticisms and suggestions that come to
us directly and not those that come to us
by hearsay.
If you sincerely want to help your
Beth Yeshurun, then you can indicate
your desire by calling the office and giv-
ing us the benefit of your ideas and sug-
gestions.
HATS OFF
TO J. B. GREENFIELD
Up in New York, the opinion
prevails that there is very little
Jewish scholarship or Jewish piety
outside of that great metropolis. We
know better, however; and one of
the best proofs that we are right is
J. B. Greenfield, better known as
“Uncle” Jake.
He is unique in many respects. •
First of all, he comes to Hous-
ton from Sated, one of Palestine’s
historic cities, described by Dr. Sol-
omon Schechter as “the city of mys-
tics and legists.” In that city lived
and taught the famous Joseph Caro,
author of the “Shulchan Aruch,”
the definitive code of Jewish law
for all Orthodox Jews throughout
the world, and also Isaac Luria,
one of the greatest mystics of all
times, author of the “Kabbalah.”
“Uncle” Jake is a worthy repre-
sentative of that great city. He is a
profound scholar of Jewish tradition
and often, between insurance poli-
cies and real estate deals, all of which
are always successful, he spends
much time in poring over ancient
Jewish lore. To him, the Synagogue
ritual and the reading of the Torah
are profound and priceless exper-
iences, because they mean so much
to him and because they speak to
him of the glorious past of our peo-
ple and our faith.
More important even than his
scholarship and his Jewish loyalty, is
his kindly and understanding na-
ture. He is the uncrowned head of
the numerous Greenfield clan and
everyone goes to “Uncle” Jake with
or difficulties. No one
ay. Upon his broad
carries the problems
and needs of many, and his heart is
big enough to understand and sym-
pathize with all of them.
No end of credit must go to his
lovely wife, Edith, who has ever
stood by his side and inspired him
to carry on his splendid work.In-
cidentally, she comes from one of
the small towns in Texas and their
marriage represents the union of
Texas and Palestine, one of the
smallest countries with the largest
state in the Union. There is also
a married daughter, Mrs. Annette
(Ted H.) Strauss, who is now liv-
in Dallas, Texas.
“Uncle” Jake has won for him-
self a warm and lasting place in our
hearts, and we always think of him
in the category covered by the
be
