For cloudy water, double
the amount of bleach. Mix
the bleach thoroughly into
the water. Let it stand for
30 minutes. The water should
have a slight chlorine odor. If
it does not, repeat the dose

an additional 16 minutes. The
taste or smell of chlorine in the
water is a sign of safety. If
the taste or smell of chlorine
is not detectable after these
procedures, do not use the
water.
Household iodine from the
medicine chest or first aid kit
will purify water. The iodine
should be 2 percent United
States Pharmacopeia (U.S.P.)

gallon of water. Let stand
30 minutes. Use iodine only
for emergencies when boiling
