Clinton, on vacation on Martha's

He is always lull of new ideas."

After calling Lieberm’n. Gore
began calling the others on the list.
Lieberman said. "It is a special
honor to be asked to run for vice
president with a man I deeply
believe in. Al Gore, and who I
think is ready to be a great presi-
dent."
The Gore campaign hoped
Lieberman s selection would be a
bold stroke heading into next
week's Democratic National
Convention in Los Angeles.
The vice president trails rival
Bush in polls after last week's GOP
convention.
A Democratic centrist, Lieberman
would amplify Gore support of fis-
cal discipline and middle class tax
cuts. Democrats said. The Gore
campaign plans to draw a contrast
to the GOP ticket's ties the oil
industry and other special interests.
Lieberman said he was sure his
record would be combed for issues
on which the two had disagreed,
but he added. "Al Gore and I have
pretty much walked the same path,
and where we've had disagree-
ments they've been good-faith dis-
agreements. never disagreements
that touch our values."
Those disagreements include
school vouchers and Social
Security privatization.
Lieberman was greeted with
cheers when he arrived for a previ-
ously scheduled speech to the
Connecticut AFL-CIO in Hartford.

Students returning to school in Budge City this year
will be seeing lots of new faces. There has been an
unusually high number of professional stall changes this
year due to retirement, moves and other reasons.
Assistant Superintendent Joe Chenella said approximate-
ly 25 new staff members -most at the intermediate
schooL-though every campus will have new employees.
Federally funded class size reduction is a welcome sit-
uation this new school year at BC schools. It doesn't pro-
vide for new teachers or classrooms, but allows already
small classrooms to stay that way. Chenella said. This
way classes should stay small enough tor the best educa-
tion of students in the sy stem w ithout overcrow ding mak
ing it less advantageous for students to learn and teachers
to handle classroom teaching.
A TIF grant from federal funds is installing a totally
interactive lab this fall, so stall can do distance learning.
Some students w ill be able to use the lab. but the primary
goal is to allow faculty members to take graduate classes
and staff to attend workshops without having to travel

The cafeteria food is not just good, he said, it's excellent. The school
pays for staff lunches, so they all eat in the cafeteria the same as the stu-
dents.
"The biggest problem with the food at school here is trying not to gain
weight," he chuckled. "They serve what everyone likes, and it's well pre-
pared."
And how about the "C" word ... Corporal punishment?
"We still maintain corporal punishment as an option," Donnaud said,
"but we seldom use it. 1 think the last kid I paddled here was one of my

Donnaud spoke for faculty and staff when he said they're excited about
school starting again and hope the students will be, too.
