THE LOSS OF A CHILD
Bill and Jean Maultsby have withstood twice what no parents
should ever have to go through once. The loss of a child.
These wonderful friends lost their only remaining daughter,
Darla, over the weekend. It's a touching story. (See inside.)
What a remarkable young lady she was.
Our hearts bleed for those parents and husband, Toby, and
daughter, Marion.

C'EST TOUT
According to Judge Pat, Bearden has sent up the white flag.
He has beat, solidly defeated anorexia. It would take five years of
starvation for him to be in trouble.
Louis Dugas doesn't have a column this week. He's been in
Abbeville. Next week we may hear about it.
Racer David Fusilier is listed as a rising star in the Dirt Track
Journal.
Jessie Wheeler shot a big bobcat. Ron Moreau's dog is too
sorry to go in the grass and get it.
Doug fights a bad rooster with a water gun.
VJ is having hot flashes and Wilson can't take care of it.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman is mentioned as Gore's VP candidate.
If so, New York and Florida could be in the Gore camp.
aprls CONVENTION-A SAMPLING
We sought out mostly people who had some political knowl-
edge. Some had fought in the trenches of their parties, while oth-
ers are "independent" (so they claim). The Orange County sam-
ple doesn't show gung-ho support for Gov. Geo. W. Bush, but at
this point, they're not wildly selling Al Gore either. A low turnout
hurts Gore.
Most overheard: "At the Republican Convention they were try-
ing to out-Democrat the Democrats" or something similar. Also
Gov. Bush was a lot like Bill Clinton in 1992.
Everyone agreed it was more symbolism than substance.
"Rehearsed entertainment," others said. Demos said, "No plan
to improve the country." One pretty savvy minority said she
resented the deceiving attempt to hoodwink minorities. The
Republican Party is still very Anglo and far to the right.
Another added, "The only thing new about the New Party is the
rhetoric; it's the same ol' boys in control."
An independent voter claims he may vote for Ralph Nader, but
■. asks, "You mean to tell me that with all the Republican leaders—
some with 98 percent conservative voting records—that George
Bush is the best the party has to offer?"
A Demo added that Bush couldn't carry Bob Dole's briefcase or
his own dad's, for that matter. A Repub noted that they both lost.
"That's why we're running someone who can get elected. I was
disappointed that he spoke contrary to the Texas party platform.
He's sounding and waffling too much like Bill Clinton for me. I'm
writing in Bauer."
Another GOP member added, "I like the governor and I liked his
delivery. I like his compassion. I believe he will energize the party
and can get elected."
A Demo said, "I watched a little-boring, choreographed from
front to back."
Another said that if Geo. W. gets elected, he will be the least
experienced, least qualified president since George Washington
first filled the office.
A Repub diehard,"It doesn't matter who's at the top of the ticket
or how liberal he sounds. The leaders in the House and Senate will
keep it from drifting to the left."
Like who, I ask. "TYent Lott, Orrin Hatch, Dick Armey ..."
Tom Delay, Bob Barr, Jessie Helms, I ask? "Yes," he answers.
"I didn't see them at the convention," a Demo observes.
Another Demo interjects, "Can anyone name one major accom-
plishment that Bush initiated in Texas in six years?"
"They will live by the platform. It doesn't matte what he says
now."
"Have you read it?" the Demo asks. "It will scare the hell out of
you."
"Judgment Day will come in the October debates."
"The country is enjoying the longest economic expansion in
U.S. history."
"Cheney's voting record and how loopholes helped them dodge
Vietnam. How does he fight that?"
"I'm sorry, but the moral smear won't stick on Al and Tipper
Gore."
. A Repub friend told the truth: "The ticket is not what I would
prefer, but I'll gladly sacrifice that to elect a Republican."
Most everyone agreed that by Labor Day Bush and Gore could
be in a dead heat in the polls. They agreed personality will play a
large part in Bush's success. And Gore is benefited by many year
of experience in the Senate and White House.
FROM THE CREAUXS NEST
SCHOOL OPENING; DRIVE WITH CARE
I hear Capt. Uzzle on Brian's fishing show talking about Sabine
Lake at 5:45 this morning. Chuck has really been getting lots of
national magazine coverage lately.
Tee-Bruce opens the Cajun mike at a few minutes past 6. The
Rev. Lee O. treats us to Ms. Helen Clark's singing and a fire and
brimstone sermon. The new equipment sounds good.
The Singing Evangelist, Bro. Rainwater, is a little under the
weather and absent this morning. I hope he didn't get it from being
under the covers. He and Sister Mandy tied the knot Friday. He'll
be back next week.
I told you last week I'd try to get some feedback on the Repub
Convention. I'm afraid it's mostly uncomplimentary to the GOP,
even by some of their own, mostly those who believe in strong
conservative principles. Don't take it out on me.
First, I was surprised so few people watched. Two out of four
watched some; one out of five watched most. Would you believe
some people watched none and they are registered to vote? I doubt
they will watch the Demo Convention next week.
I better get started and sort through these notes and quotes. So
come along. It won't do you no harm.
