$1 FROM EACH MEMBER WOULD BE SO HELPFUL
This summer, on June 29th, Toby and I will once again
lead a trip to Israel. This will be Beth Yeshurun’s ninth
A.S.T.R.O. (Adult Synagogue Trip Religiously Oriented)
trip. However, by “religion” we do not simply mean that we
will conduct services in the morning and evening, that we
will study the archaeology of the Holy Land and visit areas
holy to Jews since biblical days. By “religion” we mean that
we will also do something — not merely read about Israel
or recite words of religious nature.
For the past several years we have always visited
Nahariya, in northern Israel, while we were in Israel. There
we visited an institution called “Bet Kay.” This is a very
unique place. It is a rehabilitation center for severely
wounded Israeli military veterans, those who have served
their country and suffered the pain and anguish of being
severely wounded. It is not a Veterans’ Hospital. In fact, it
is not a hospital. It looks more like a motel than anything
else. However, its clientele consists only of severely wounded
veterans and their families.
At Bet Kay these veterans stay for several days or several
weeks — with their families. They get hot baths and enjoy
the whirlpools; they swim in the pool and receive instruction
from therapists in order to strengthen atrophied muscles;
and they enjoy different sports activities without being stared
at by curious civilians.
In addition to these veterans being helped and rehabili-
tated, their families also enjoy the opportunity of being with
their fathers and husbands while they are undergoing the
therapy. Families are not separated. Morale therefore
remains very high.
Each year when we visit Bet Kay we usually spend two
or three hours at the Institute talking to some of the men
who are being rehabilitated — and also to their wives and
children. In the past we have spent time with a young man
who had already undergone 27 operations and was going to
St. Louis for #28; we spent a half hour with a young veteran
whose arm had been shot off but had been resewn onto his
shoulder by an Israel team of surgeons; and we also spoke to a
man who had been pronounced dead, put in a body bag, and
placed in the “cooler” until someone had heard him groaning.
Last year we brought to Bet Kay a check for $5,000 which
came from the members of Beth Yeshurun. The money was
initially earmarked to help build an indoor pool so that
rehabilitation could go on during the winter months too.
However, when I arrived there the administrator told me
that 5 other synagogues had already donated the money that
was necessary for the indoor pool. However, he said, “We still
do not have at the pool an elevator that can lower the severely
wounded into the water from the edge of the pool.” He also
said that Bet Kay was still greatly in need of sports equip-
ment for its programs. He asked if our donation could be
specified for the elevator and the sports equipment, and I
said, “Definitely!”
This year I would once again like to bring to Bet Kay a
donation from the members of Beth Yeshurun. This year I
would like to bring at least $1 from every member of our
synagogue. We have 2,057 families who belong to Beth
Yeshurun. This involves 6,889 individuals. I would truly love
to bring to Bet Kay this summer a check for $6,889 so that the
rehabilitation center might continue to help those men and
women who gave so much to the State of Israel that it might
remain secure.
My family consists of 6 people — my wife, 4 children, and
