After kindling the lights chant the following:
HANEROT HALALU
These lights we kindle to mark the marvelous liberation and
the wonders which Thou didst perform for our ancestors through
Thy holy priests. These lights are sacred all the eight days of
Chanukah, and we are not permitted to make profane use of
them, but only to look at them so as to give thanks to Thee for Thy
miraculous saving actions.
Some 2200 years ago, Antiochus IV, who ruled the
Seleucid empire, ordered his troops to enter the temple in
Jerusalem and alter it so that it would become, like all other
temples in his empire, part of the imperial worship structure.
The reaction of some Jews was predictable — they accepted
his command. The Maccabees, and many others, however,
were unwilling to desert their ancestral traditions and volun-
teered to sacrifice whatever was needed to assure the con-
tinuity of the Jewish faith.
A military struggle followed and resulted in the great
miracle of Chanukah . . . the triumph of a small, out-
numbered, apparently doomed group over the well organ-
ized, trained and mighty Syrian-Greek empire.
That miracle — the triumph of the spirit, the victory of
faith — we celebrate when we light the Chanukah candles.
The first Candle should be lit on Friday evening, Decem-
ber 10th. The eighth Candle should be lit on Friday evening,
December 17th.
KINDLING THE LIGHTS
1. The candles in your Menorah should be placed in a
straight row, since no day of Chanukah is superior to another.
Only the Shames, the “kindler” and guardian of the lights,
the 9th candle, should stand higher than the others.
2. The Chanukah lights should be kindled after dark
(except on Friday nights).
3. This is the proper way to kindle the lights: On the first
night place one candle in the Menorah at the extreme right.
On the other seven nights: place the candles from right to
left, adding one each night. Light the Shames. With it, light
the candle on the left first.
4. Before lighting the candles each night, the first two
brachot (blessings) are recited. The third brachah is said
on the first night only. After the candles are lit, it is a popular
custom to sing Hanerot Halalu and Maoz Tzur.
5. On Friday the Chanukah candles are lit before the
Sabbath candles. At the conclusion of the Sabbath the
Havdalah candle is lit before the Chanukah Menorah candles.
6. Give a contribution to the poor so that they too may
enjoy Chanukah.
