RABBI SEGALS COLUMN:
“THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS”
Beth Yeshurun is more than “a synagogue.” It is “a large
synagogue,” “a very large synagogue.” As such, it can not
sustain itself merely through its staff. It is strongly depend-
ent on volunteers who participate in many congregational
functions and help make them successful.
Sunday, November 21, the congregation modified a bit the
regular TNT Service so that its new members might also
attend, participate in the service, enjoy the TNT breakfast,
and get to meet other Beth Yeshurunites . . . new ones and
old ones alike. There were 264 in attendance at the service
and breakfast and everyone truly enjoyed himself and her-
self.
But there were two interesting side notes to this specific
service. That Sunday we put into effect our “Beth Yeshurun
’Missionary’ Program” ... to have our Tephillin instructors
go amongst our congregdpts and ask the men attending if
they would like to put on Tephillin. The instructors said that
they would show those in attendance how to put them on ...
and a pleasant surprise occurred. The TNT program has 37
pairs of Tephillin . . . and all were in use. WE ACTUALLY
RAN OUT OF TEPHILLIN . . . and everyone said, “I truly
enjoyed the experience of putting on the Tephillin.” But this
would have been impossible without our volunteer Tephillin
instructors — Dr. Jim Caplan, Donald Gretzer. Louis Katz
and Arnold Rosenzweig — and we are still looking for more
instructors. We need them. In fact, I even had several 7th
grade youngsters going about the congregation before the
service and saying to the men in attendance, “Wouldn’t you
like to put on the Tephillin? You’ll really enjoy it” . . . and
they did. In fact, several men felt terribly disappointed that
they came a bit late and they could not get a pair of Tephillin.
We had run out of our supply of 37.
So too, every Sunday we depend on a group of men and
women to prepare and serve the TNT breakfast. .. and it is
truly a delicacy. It is a major project. For five years
Sharon Taitel and her mother Jean Glinberg headed this
committee. It was a labor of love for them — and for their
volunteers. They bought the food, prepared the food, and
served the food . . . and everyone enjoyed the breakfasts.
This year, Marie and Gerson Cweren assumed the chair-
manship of this committee and have continued the breakfast
excellence. It is truly a pleasure to see 10 men, women, and
children lined up weekly to dole out the food to all those who
attend the service. In fact, this group has become so pro-
ficient in its activity that it even looks more professional than
the serving line at “Luby’s.” There is always a smile on their
faces and a kind word on their lips: “What else can I
give you?”
In Pirke Avot we are told, “Tov Torah im derech eretz, ”
“Torah is good with worldly pursuits.” A person can not
be one-dimensional. Religion is important and secular acti-
vities are important, but a blend of the two is best. Tephillin
is good and synagogue breakfasts are good, but a mixture of
the two is best . . . and both need the help of volunteers.
Therefore I ask, “Why not join us?” If you can help us as a
member of our “Beth Yeshurun ‘Missionary’ Team”(B.M.T.),
as a Tephillin instructor Sunday mornings, he you man or
woman . . . please call my secretary and I will personally
call you to tell you the specifics of the program. If you can
help us — both women and men — as servers on Sunday
mornings, please call my secretary and Marie or Gerson
Cweren will personally call you. Don’t sit by idly on the side-
lines. Be active. Be a volunteer. Help your synagogue and
