When I returned from puttering eround the
woods behind my house I found him tying on the
sun warmed garage floor looking as thin as he
had looked the first day I laid eyes on him I knew
m a second from the way he held his limp fragile
paws and lifted his heed nearly but not quite
upright that there was trouble I had noticed him
looking somewhat thinner the last several
I remember the traumatic day P K who had
always been an inside cat made the great
transition to the roll of Walker of the Woods He
had always seemed sad at be.ng locked inside
Sitting before the petio doors and peering out at
the feal world beyond Every chance he got of
course he xvould slip between my legs and make
a wild passionate dash for freedom only to
come slmkina back for petting or food or some
other charitable handout within the hour
’ had great misgivings about opening the door
to the outside world for good PK was afterali
clawless defenseless at the mercy of the
elements and the other creatures of the field and
woods from stray dogs and God only knew
what else
It didn’t teke him long
to climb a tree or jump to a li
peril or to establish himself thre,
size and chutzpah as Top Cat
pecking order of a slowly growing
that eventually stabilized at four
Throughout everything, P K endured With a
remote elegence reminiscent of the Royal
Family my §0 acres was his 50 acres and one
look mto his deep thoughtful eyes told you he
knew it
i he often would out or.
for the others
eventually, I began to und;
reason for hi$ aloofness It wasn't t
inability to interrelate with others or
to show his own needs as it was a
instinct Only after the rest of the fl
sated and secure woul
the crumbs
I can’t say that P K was an especially amazing
cat He never saved my life by scratching at the
door to warn me that an ember from the
fireplace had leaped through the grate and
caught the rug on fire not the wey a cat m a
Walt Disney movie might be expected to do Nor
was he an especially inexpensive creature to
maintain True, he cost me nothing in the
begimng showing up at the doorstoop as a
stray But if I stopped to add up ail the
expenses medical and otherwise since those
first few days of our relationship I'm sure they
would approach the underside of three quarters
of a thousand dollars We re not talking about
your average farm stray
But. as you might expect from someone who
has lived with an animal for the better part of a
decade, I would gladly do it all again spend every
penny and then some if it meant a happy
healthy pet and a friend m the end But I’m
afraid that isn t possible for P K
weeks But I thought it a natural consequence of
his growing older Indeed. I suppose, it was
I lifted P K into my ar ms end earned him to the
basement where I set him on some towels next
to the woodburning stove There he has
stayed for the last several hours barely strong
enough to lift himself to his feet turn hie head
sl.ghtly and lower himself back down
Occasionally he releases a soft meow a mere
pathetic shadow of the robust cries he once
owned They are not so much the cries of an
animal m pam as they are of an animal grown
old tired as though checking to see that
someone is still eround that someone still
cares
In that respect they remind me excuse me
for being maudlin of my grandmother in the
months preceding her departure from this life
She was a wonderfully warm, vibrant,
extraordinarily happy lady to whom no grandson
it s a lens capable of producing an mfmate range
vet as her tired aged body wound siowty
down her voice grew shallow and soft, her
movements markedly slower until, finally
everthing stopped Not with a bang nor any sort
of flourish There was no fanfare Only life one
instant and none the next At least none in the
way there had once been
Now I don’t have any earth shattering reason
for wr iting this particular column I can't think of
much m the way of a tie m with photography
either except that throughout their lives I took
at least a few photographs of both Granny and
my cat They seem like too few now and I regret
not having taken more But I can tell you one
thing Im very glad I have those few
remembrances Life l guess it s true, s all too
Short
I m losing a good friend today Or if not today
certainly no later then tomorrow He is a cat a
Short Haired American Tabby, I beieive the
proper designation is But he is much more than
that to me And he is dying
l am not what one would cell a typical cat
lancer Infact until PK wandered mto my life I
felt about cats much the same wav l felt about
spiders that if God had ever meant them to
occupy a place of worth in the overall scheme of
life He would have made them else
even a cent pede
My feelings about spiders have smee
changed as they have about cats It began
when I went to the door that blustery frigid
January night and found a tiny shivertna skin
and bones wretch staring up at me berely able
to meow holding one paw out as it it belonged
on the end of a thorn plagued lion Of course I
took it in and fed it some milk all the while
