This is most certainly a unique Akiba study group! In addition to the eight
adults who met each Saturday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. during the past
year to study Pirke Avot and the Torah Portion of the Week with Mrs. Ethel
Feigon, six of their children also participated in the learning process with their
parents. And because it was such a family effort, ESP was the perfect service to
show off the joys of family togetherness in Jewish study. Coordinating this
special event has been class member Connie Zeisman.
The Bar/Bat Binah (knowledge) adults are graduates of other Akiba pro-
grams, including the Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes. The youngsters, Josh and
Jennifer Handy, Becky and Karen Schneider, and Josh and Melissa Victor,
were inspired by their parents’ labors and eager to be a part of the B/BB gradu-
ation. For a real Akiba “first,” don’t miss the ESP service on Friday, October 12,
at 6 p.m. As always, it’s short, and this week, it’s ESPecially sweet, because it’s
truly a family affair!
Once again, it’s time to celebrate the coming-of-Jewish-
commitment-age by a group of adults who, for eight
months, have studied diligently at the Monday evening
Akiba Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes taught by Rabbi
Stephen Grundfast and Lisa Lewis. With Rabbi Grund-
fast, they learned the fundamentals of Judaism, including
the Jewish holidays and life cycle, the synagogue and reli-
gious objects, and related subjects. With Lisa, they mas-
tered the Hebrew they needed for the service... and many
of them literally started from Aleph-Bet!
On October 13, they will chant the Torah and Haftorah,
as well as conduct the Shabbat service. Speaking for the
class will be Joyce Rosenthal. They’ve found the challenge
great, but the rewards even greater, and hopefully, their
efforts may inspire others to make a major commitment to
Judaism by signing up for this year’s Akiba classes. What
a way to grow!
