says Italian artist-historian Giorgio Vasari,
came on the Sabbath “like flocks of starlings"

Program #5-Monday, Feb. 4-10:30 AM
“The Search For Deliverance”
(Period: 1492 to 1789 C.E.)
During the 300 years between 1492 and 1789, the Jews of
Europe rode a roller coaster that, over and over again, ranged
from the heights of new opportunities to the depths of despair.
The tragic expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal
scattered them to the few lands still open to Jews, the Ottoman
Empire, Italy and Poland. Under the Moslem Turks, the Jews
reached new peaks of success in Constantinople, as well as a new
religious foothold in the Holy Land in the city of Safed. In Italy,
Jews played an important role in the cultural life of the Renais-
sance, then fell into a new form of persecution called the ghetto.
They thrived in the Netherlands, were damned by Martin
Luther, achieved a major new cultural center in Poland, were
crushed by Russian Cossacks and false Messiahs, and enjoyed a
new rebirth of the Jewish spirit in Hasidism. This is a fascinat-
ing episode in the PBS-TV film series of Abba Eban’s history of
the Jews. Be sure to join us at Akiba next Monday morning,
February 4.
