Sanger will be represented at the state
powerlifting competition in Austin April 4 by
five students who qualified during Saturday's
regional meet at Frisco High School. The meet
saw Sanger win with the top number of points in
competition between 1A. 2A and 3A schools in
an 11-county region of North Texas.
Sanger had 34 points. Frisco came in second
with 32 points, and Bowie finished third with
28 points.
Two of the five students were regional
champions, with Martin Villanueva, sophomore,
winning first in the 123-pound class with a 920-
pound total. Villanueva also was named
"Outstanding Lifter" in the Lighter Class
Divisions, which was 114 to 165 pounds.
Sanger's other champion was Justin Slider,
junior, who won first in the 220-pound class
with a 1.365-pound total.
SHS also brought back three second-place
awards to qualify for state. The top two places in
each weight class qualify for the state meet,
which will be at Austin's Bowie High School.
Winning second place were Joey Juarez,
senior, in the 148-pound class with a 1,045-
pound total; Brian Bell, senior, in the 165-pound
class with a 1,050-pound total; and Tracy Tutt,
sophomore, in the 242-pound class with a
1,230-pound total.
Other winners in the regional meet from
Sanger were: David Ohlinger placed third in the
148-pound class, Daniel Bell placed fourth in
the 114-pound class, Jason Shuffield placed fifth
in the 181-pound class and Jack George placed
fifth in the 242-pound class.
The powerlifting regions are divided as
follows: Region 1, West Texas; Region 2, Central
Texas; Region 3, East Texas; Region 4, Gulf
Coast; Region 5, South Texas; and Region 5,
North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth
Metroplex area.
To compete in Saturday's regional meet, a
lifter must be in the top 10 in his weight class
out of all the 1A, 2A and 3A schools in the
following counties: Dallas, Fannin, Montague,
Tarrant, Grayson, Wise, Rockwall, Denton,
Parker, Collin and Cooke.
So getting to the regional meet is tough, but
it is quite difficult to qualify for the state meet.
Athletic Director James Ivy said he and the
other coaches are very proud of the boys' finish
at the regional meet. "That’s a big accom-
plishment for our program," he said.
He said it is hard to know what the other
regions will bring to the state competition, but
added, "I feel like they'll do well. They've done a
great Job this year."
Sanger Coach Keith Hendricks, head coach
for powerlifting, said, "Congratulations goes out
to all the lifters and coaches for a great Job in
gaining respect for Sanger High School and its
athletic program."
