1 would like to thank Judge
Barbara Gailey for her time and
efforts she put forward in
offering the drug forum at
Chisholm Trail Thursday night,
Feb. 27. She provided a priceless
opportunity for parents and kids
to hear about the dangers and
consequences of drug abuse.
The message from the
young men from McFadden
Ranch were heartbreaking and
the message from the local
parents fighting the drug battle
with their son could not be
ignored. Jason Garrett from the
Dallas Cowboys was a pleasure
to hear and an inspiration to the
kids present. His input was
excellent.
I have to say, though, that I
was greatly disappointed in the
lack of attendance to such an
important forum of information.
As easily as we can fill up football
stadiums here and afar, I only

My family and I just moved
here from Argyle. My daughter
is in fourth grade and was a
cheerleader for pee-wee football
last year. We were planning to
sign her up this next football
season, but a friend of hers told
her that in Sanger, you have to
try out for the squad. I want to
know why. I think that is just
ridiculous, and I want to know
who makes that decision.
I asked if the boys have to try
out to make the football team. I
was told no. My daughter’s
friend told her that there is a drill
team, and while that is fine, it is
not really the same thing. My
daughter wants to be a
cheerleader. 1 feel it is absurd to
make 8 and 9-year-old girls have
to get up in front of a gymnasium
full of people and try-out. They
have to deal with that stuff soon
enotigh. Why make them start so
young?
1 think that whoever wants to
be a pee-wee cheerleader, should
be allowed to. I feel that whoever
makes the rule, should change it.
What does it matter how many
girls are on the squad? Most
mothers would be glad to pitch
in and help if they needed to. I
know 1 would. I did last year in
Argyle.
At this age it is very
important for kids, especially
girls, to fit in. If most of a girl’s
friends are cheerleaders, then
that girl is going to want to be
one, too. I’m sure I am not the
only parent to feel this way. I
have talked to other mothers
here in Sanger who have told me
of their frustration. Some have
told me when their daughters
didn’t make the squad, other
little girls teased them.
1 think that it is cruel to make
little girls go through this at such
a tender age. We like Sanger but
finding out about this really
dismayed me. I hope that
somehow this can be changed,
and that every girl has a chance
to participate if they choose.

wish we could fill events such as
this to the same degree. Parents,
please don’t be living in denial.
Drugs are present in Sanger, and
some kids in our schools ARE
using drugs!
We must take the same
attitude in this game as we do
toward winning district and
regional championships. Except,
this game is a lot tougher to win.
It’s called the game of life and
our kids growing up today have
numerous temptations and
distractions available to them to
steer them off the successful
track. I urge you to not miss a
future opportunity such as this
again. 1 also urge you to talk to
your kids frequently about the
dangers of alcohol and drug use.
Notice I said USE and not
just ABUSE. A fine line
differentiates the two. DO NOT
assume that this nightmare
cannot invade your home. That
will be the first mistake. Care
enough about winning the game
to be involved in your kid’s win
against these deadly opponents.
My message to the teens: I
am grateful that our school
administrators understood how
important it was for you to hear
from the young men from
McFadden Ranch. I urge you to

take their message seriously and
to heart. Their stories might be
different than yours but their
end result will not be, if you are
allowing the power of drugs to
defeat you.
Don’t play the drug game;
you cannot win. Make the right
choice! As Jason (Jarrett said at
the forum, “The best weapon in
life is the right choice.” I urge
you to use that weapon
continuously and consistently!
For those of you that are fighting
the drug scene, KEEP ON! We
are proud of your choices and we
encourage you to stay DRUG
FREE. You will reach the end
zone and score successfully.
