Gregory said approximate-
ly 15 alumni attended the first
practice last week, and Sandette
Captain Kaley Ortega and Co-
Captain Catherine Garza will
be teaching alumni the routine.
“They’re all excited,” Orte-
ga said.
“I think they were more
excited about redoing the fight
song. They’re like, ‘After 15
years, I’ve still got this,”’ Garza
added with a laugh.
Gregory is expecting about
30 people to dance at the football
game this year.
A required field practice
is slated for Thursday, Sept. 3
Several former members of the Calhoun High School Sandette drill team work on their kicks during a practice held last week in
preparation for the upcoming kickback dance. The routine will be performed with the current Sandette team during halftime at
the Sept. 4 Calhoun football game, which is the first home game of the season. Game kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Sandcrab
Stadium. (Sherry Ficklen/Wave photo)
beginning at 7 p.m. The hour-
long practice will take place at
Sandcrab Stadium, and helps
Gregory get a final head count
for game time.
“They need to come to Sun-
day’s practice to learn the rou-
tine, and then the next practice
is on the field. It’s the Thursday
before the game,” Gregory said.
The dance, this year, will
be performed to the song Dance
Again by Jennifer Lopez.
“The Sandettes are going
to start out the dance, and then
half way through, it sounds
like the music ends, but then
it comes back up and then the

line splits and the alumni, they
come in. The alumni will do the
high kick. We’ll do high kick
and a bunch of ripples,” Greg-
ory said.
“They’ll do the same thing
as us,” Ortega said.
“It’s a good feeling to see
all of them out there,” Garza
added.
In several past years, the
kickback dance was held in con-
junction with a children’s dance
that was taught at a children’s
camp.
“In the past years, we’ve
been with the kids camp and
the kickback at the same time,”
months. The seven years of
reduced property tax will ap-
ply to the improvements to the
real estate.
Pelorus, based in The
Woodlands, has operations at
other ports along the Gulf of
Mexico. The terminal here is
to provide loading of crude
condensate for barges and
ocean-going vessels, on-shore
tankage, truck offloading sta-
tions and a petrochemical
product transfer system to
load ships.
The proposal calls for 20
to 25 local contractors during
construction and 42 employ-
ees after completion.
The tax abatement is to
be for 90 percent of value the
first two years, 85 percent in
2017, and percentages of 75,
50, 25 and 10 for the following
years.
Commissioners first held
a public hearing, which drew
no comments, before declar-
ing the leased property a rein-
vestment zone. They then ap-
proved the application for the
tax abatement agreement.
Commissioners also re-
ceived an independent audit
report for the year ending Dec.
31, 2014, from accounting firm
Rutledge Crain & Company.
Financial highlights in
the report said the assets of
the county at the end of 2014
exceeded liabilities by $60.3
million. Of that amount, $29.5
million was available “to meet
the government’s ongoing ob-
ligations to citizens and credi-
tors.” The unassigned portion
of the general fund balance at
the end of the year was $21.7
million. The combined gov-
ernmental fund balance was
$28.7 million, an increase of
$3.3 million over the previous
year.
Commissioners submit-
ted annual road reports re-
quired under the Texas Trans-
portation Code.
Precinct 1 Commissioner
Galvan reported one mile
of road would be raised two
feet this year and a quarter
of a mile damaged by storms
would be repaired, plus six
culverts would be replaced.
He estimated costs for road
maintenance at $150,000.
Precinct 2 Commissioner
25, Corpus Christi, arrested by
CCSO on a bench warrant for
unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Mark Alan Forsyth, 54,
Port Lavaca, arrested by CCSO
for driving while license
suspended with previous
conviction/suspension without
financial responsibility.
Michael Paul Morales, 37,
Port Lavaca, arrested by Port
Lavaca Police Department for
disorderly conduct by fighting
and a warrant for criminal
mischief more than $50 and less
The arrest records made
available through the Port
Lavaca Wave newspaper
are public information. Any
indication of an arrest does
not mean the individual
identified has been convicted of
a crime. All persons arrested are
innocent until proven guilty in a
court of law.

their selves,” Garza added.
Strauss, who performed at
previous kickback dances, is
planning to be out on the field
next Friday with the Sandettes.
This year, Strauss is excited to
bring her children to see her
perform for the first time.
“I still get nervous go-
ing out on the field, which you
would think it wouldn’t be a big
deal, but there’s still nerves be-
cause you’re dancing in front
of this humongous crowd, but
I love to dance,” Strauss said.
“It’s an awesome experience.”
