Chance O’Shel has been on
the job as a fireman for three
years.
The 21-year-old would be
considered a “newbie,” but
he enjoys all the regular stuff
most fireman do.
“I enjoy hanging out with
my fellow brothers in the fire
department, grilling, hunting,
fishing, etc.,” he said.
He also tries to visit his
family in Dallas as often as
possible.
O’Shel is featured as
firefighter of the week.
Reason I wanted to be-
come a fireman:
I was a kid. My dad was a
firefighter in the city of Plano
for 25 years, and that originally
COUNCIL from page Al —
for the current tenants.
The council also learned
that no dockage fees have been
collected from the property
either, which in this case is
$2.25 per foot per month.
“I just think one of the
things we have to keep in
mind, is we gave the Port
Commission permission to do
these things, so if this is their
suggestion, I say let’s go with
it,” councilman Jim Ward said.
“If we give them permission,
then say we’re going to change
it, then we’re not giving
them permission. We’re just
saying, ‘You’re just a figure
head.’ I think that’s one of the
drew me to this career. Also
when I was 11 we lost our
home to a devastating fire,
and ever since then I knew I
wanted to help families with
what I have been through, by
hopefully preventing the loss
of everything that’s special to
them. I can truly say this is my
calling.
What is the most chal-
lenging part of the job?
Seeing accidents and
people getting hurt, it’s a
plus at the same time though
because it makes me more
attentive to detail.
things that have been very
irritating to members of the
Port Commission because we
have over-ridden, or you know,
people tell us this, but we’re
probably not going to do it, or
we will or won’t or whatever. If
this is their recommendation,
then let’s go with it.”
Councilman Ken Barr
said there is talk on the street
that the Port Commission, and
other boards and commissions
for that matter, have no real
power.
“I have heard the comment
from different people saying the
Port Commission has no power,
the council has all the power,”
What advice would you
give to the community?
Tomorrow isn’t always
guaranteed. So live life to the
fullest every day you can, and
be grateful for it.
The brotherhood I have
created with all my fellow
firefighters.
What should people
know about you or about
being a fireman?
I have been doing this job
with
Inc.
for almost 3 years now and I’ve
never regretted my decision
for choosing this career path. I
started out young (at the age of
18) and I’m very glad I did. I’ve
learned a lot from this job, and
its creating a great path for my
future.
waterfront stuff for a long time,
and they know we need to be
increasing that and making
better money. That’s why Port
Lavaca has not been able to
develop the way it needs to
develop, is we’ve been renting
stuff too cheap here. It’s not
this cheap anywhere else.”
After the discussion, the
city council went with the Port
Commission’s recommendation
and will issue a proposal for
bids to lease the Evelyn’s
property. Bids will open in
January, and the council could
decide which bids to accept at
its February meeting.
What advice would you
give to upcoming firemen?
Come in to this job for the
love of it, and don’t expect it to
be easy.

Barr said. “So why do we
even have a port commission
because they have to bend to
the city council.”
Barr agreed with Ward,
saying if the city is going to
have a Port Commission, then
let it make those decisions.
“Don’t let it be said, that
whatever they decide to do, the
council is going to override it,”
he said.
Councilman Jerry Smith
thinks it’s a deeper issue.
“I think (the Port
Commission) is trying to do
a good job,” he said. “They
