Growing degree days are calculated by taking the average temperature
for the day and subtracting the base temperature (50 degrees) from the
average to assess how many growing days are attained.
Weather History
Dec. 30, 1988 - Unseasonably
cold weather prevailed in the
southwestern United States. A
week of subfreezing temperatures
in Southern California claimed
the lives of five people. Redding,
Calif, was blanketed with four
inches of snow.
Dec, 29, 1830 - A very heavy
snowstorm ushered in the “winter
of the deep snow’’. The storm
produced 30 inches of snow
at Peoria, Ill. and 36 inches at
Kansas City, Mo. The snow
continued until the middle of
February, causing great suffering
among pioneers.

commissioners decided to pass
on the matter. The Memorial
Medical Clinic board earlier
this month transferred $325,000
to the county government for
land for a rural health clinic.
On another matter,
commissioners accepted a
letter of resignation from
Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace
Peggy Dworaczyk effective Dec.
31 and agreed to continue to pay
rent on the office she owns for
at least one more month. Long-
time JP James Dworaczyk died
in October and his widow was
appointed to fill the term in
office, which runs to Dec. 31,
2014. Mrs. Dworaczyk said at
the time that finishing the term
was important to her. Precinct
4 Commissioner Kenny Finster
said he was unsure of her
reason for resigning. The
commissioners could appoint
a replacement or leave the
position vacant.
In other
commissioners:
- Made budget adjustments
including for the jail at the
request of incoming sheriff
George Aleman. Four job titles
of corporal will be changed
to jailer with expenditures
dropping from $145,624 to
$143,488 and an administrative
clerk will be changed to
assistant jail administrator
with an expenditure increase
from $35,872 to $38,008.
- Gave final approval for the
replatting of land at Fourth
Street and Hwy. 185 in Port
O’Connor to be used as a
recreational vehicle park by
Ted Gaetjen.
