Gainesville Police arrested Cindy Diane Monroe,
53, on Saturday for the hit and run death of Maria
Gomez-Cardenas, 62.
Police reported Cardenas was attempting to enter
her vehicle, which was parked in the 1200 block of
Fair Avenue when a gray 2002 Mercury 4-door car
traveling north on Fair Avenue struck her then left the
scene.
Cardenas was transported to North Texas Medical
Center where she succumbed to her injuries.
This vehicle driven by Monroe was then involved in
a one vehicle roll-over accident in the 4900 block of
North Interstate 35.
Following the preliminary investigation into the
fatality accident, Monroe was arrested and charged
with the second degree felony offense of accident

Filmmaker and 1999 Gainesville High School grad-
uate Johnathan Paul will be at the Lyceum on the North
Central Texas College campus Thursday at 6 p.m. to
talk about his upcoming documentary. “The Great
Hanging”, a film about the largest mass hanging in
United States history. At the height of the Civil War, 44
suspected union sympathizers were killed during this
event in Cooke County.
“I know this is a dark moment in our history but it is
a story that needs to be told,” Paul said. “You can’t run
from it so we are meeting it head on.”
Paul said the University of North Texas sponsored
independent feature is estimated to cost $70,000 to
$80,000 and will be the theme for his thesis.
“That covers the cost of actors, sites, art and legal
fees,” he said. “ Richard McCaslin who wrote about the
event in his book ‘Tainted Breeze’ has been so helpful.”
