Proponents of legal gay
marriage contend that gay
marriage bans are discrimi-
natory and unconstitutional,
and that same-sex couples
should have access to all the
benefits enjoyed by differ-
ent-sex couples.
In the Pew Research
polling in 2001, Americans
opposed same-sex marriage
by a 57 percent to 35 percent
margin. Since then, support
for same-sex marriage has
steadily grown, according to
Pew Research. Today, a
majority of Americans, 57
percent, support same-sex
marriage, compared with 39
percent who oppose it. A
Gallup report released on
May 8, 2012 found that
national support for same-
sex marriage peaked in 2011
at 53 percent, dropping to 50
percent in 2012. Support for
same-sex marriage has risen
among both men and
women in recent years.

Now, hundreds of Texas
public officials seek guid-
ance on how to implement
the new law.
“There is not, however, a
court order in place in Texas
to issue any particular
license whatsoever - only
the direction by the U.S.
Supreme Court on
Constitutionality and appli-
cable state laws,” Attorney
General Paxton stated in an
opinion.
Locally, Justice of the
Peace Judge Dorthy Lewis
said she does not perform
same-sex weddings. To do
so would be a violation of
her long and closely held
religious beliefs the practice
of which is guaranteed by
the First Amendment to the
United States Constitution.
“Justices of the Peace are
authorized to conduct mar-
riage ceremonies by Texas
state law,” Lewis said. “The
Attorney General opinions
have demonstrated that
Justices of the Peace have
no mandatory duty to per-
form any wedding ceremo-
ny. I have chosen to not per-
form same sex marriages.”
Justice of the Peace
Carroll Johnson was not
available for comment at
press time.
Paxton stated in his opin-
ion, “The reach of the
Court’s opinion stops at the
door of the First
Amendment and our laws
protecting religious liberty.

It is important to note that
any clerk who wishes to
defend their religious objec-
tions and who chooses not
to issue licenses may well
face litigation and, or a fine.
But, numerous lawyers
stand ready to assist clerks
defending their religious
beliefs, in many cases on a
pro-bono basis, and I will do
everything I can from this
office to be a public voice
for those standing in defense
of their rights.
Archbishop Joseph E.
Kurtz of Louisville,
Kentucky, president of the
U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB) stated
that recognizing same-sex
marriage, “is a tragic error
that harms the common
good and most vulnerable
among us. Regardless of
what a narrow majority of
the Supreme Court may
declare at this moment in
history, the nature of the
human person and marriage
remains unchanged and
unchangeable. It is pro-
foundly immoral and unjust
for the government to
declare that two people of
the same sex can constitute a
marriage.”
Other denominations
have issued statements
against same-sex marriages.
On Aug. 4, 2010, the
Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints released
the statement, “Marriage
between a man and a
woman is the bedrock of
society.”
Locally, pastor Frank
Lome from Corinth Baptist
Church said, “I don’t plan to
perform same-sex mar-
riages.”
Pastor Don Yeager from
First United Methodist
Church said the United
Methodist General
Conference has issued poli-
cies about human sexuality.
“Pastors are not allowed
to perform same sex cere-
monies,” Yeager said. “”We
don’t allow them performed
in churches. They are not
legal in the church.”
The Southern Baptist
Convention posted a blog
from Ronnie Floyd, “How
does one celebrate the legal-
ization of same-sex mar-
riage from the White House
and within a short amount of
time make a congratulatory
phone call closing with the
words, "God bless you"?
Does God bless a same-sex
union or marriage ceremo-
ny?”
In a Sept. 13, 2010
speech, Pope Benedict XVI
expressed his opposition to
gay marriage, stating the
Roman Catholic Church
“cannot approve of legal ini-
tiatives that imply a re-eval-
uation of the life of the cou-
ple and the family.”
“As Catholic bishops, we
follow our Lord and will
continue to teach and to act
according to this truth,”
Archbishop Kurtz said.
