ENSIGN JOE W. BROWN
Ensign Brown was in the service when the war began,
stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japs made their at-
tack. Later he campaigned all over the South Pacific
and Far East, and was in several major engagements.
Joe was injured in action, and after a period of hos-
pitalization, was returned to the States and honorably
discharged from the service as a casualty. He is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Gus T. Brown.
STAFF SGT. GUS. T. "PINKEY" BROWN
Sgt. Brown, Engineer and aerial Gunner on a B-17
Flying Fortress, returned home in August, 1944, from
his station in Italy, after having taken part in many
combat missions over enemy Europe. His most adven-
turous exploit was when his plane "Madam Lily" was
shot down over territory partly held by the soldiers of
General Mihailovich, leader of the Slav insurrectionists.
His crew was rescued after a pitched battle with the
Germans, and Sgt. Brown for a time was the special
protege of the General; after this experience, made his
way afoot through seven hundred miles of hostile country
to the American lines. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gus T. Brown, Sr., a graduate of Luling High School,
and was an early volunteer in the Air Corps.
