NKW YORK June 5 New York's Midtown Bus
TTrnunal runs the length of a city block and to it
every three minutes of the day and night come and
go big red. green and yellow roadhogs from Seattle.
Miami. Boston Detroit Albuquerque san Francisco
and all points North South. East and West
Some of the buses are streamlined and sleek, and
others are scarecrows of the road, old shabby dere-
HcU with broken seats and frayed upholstery—but
they get you there just the same This terminal is
only a few steps from Times Square in the thick of
things Traffk- is nerve-wracking Inside the terminal
the amplifiers and loud speakers relay fog-horn volcei
constantly announcing Ute arrival and departure of
tbe various buses
The first thing you see. from the 43rd street «de
is a “tourist agency" This is local It gives informs-
Don and arranges tours in the city for the benefit
of vvttors Next there is a Western Union telegraph
Next to this is a newsstand, with all the
recent papers and magazines Further on are the
ticket agents the baggage room, the shoeshine
; stand* the public telephones and the restaurant
Frequently the radio in this restaurant vies for
attention with the public address system and when
thia happens the noise ts something to consider This
radio feeds • steady flow at bulletins and war roci-
muniques from the front during the forenoon, and
a play-by-play desenpiton of baaebaH games during
tbe afternoon
You walk in these during the afternoon, and the
radio to surrounded by bus driver*, waiters and other
people When Brooklyn is playing it Is hard to get
anyone to wait on you—that's how avidly the Mid-
town gang follow* the fortunes of the Brooklyn bail
club
Back of the chunter, where you can get "luscious "
steak sandwiches with French fried potatoes for 30
cents, there is a waitress with black hair Yesterday
she was a red head The first time I saw her a bus
driver came tn and tweeked her nose She gave him
a cold level gaze and turned away
-Still mad. eh’ ' he asked
“Why don’t you let Mae atone?" one of the other
waitresses cried
“Listen said the bus driver Were you ever mar-
ried to me?"
“I should say not “
’•Well. Mae was She was my first wife."
Itomda May Nat Ukr Americans
French and British Caribbean possessions have a
total population of around 2 690 000 Largsst British
island is Jamaica, with Trinidad, it is considered one
of the most important from a strategic standpoint
France hold* Guadeloupe and Martinique: the Dutch
have six small islands the most important being
Curacao. Bonaire and Aruba, where there are ex-
tensive oil retinenes
One point Americans usually overtook tn discussing
acqulsitlori of the islands is that inhabitants of the
British West Indies are strongly empire-conscious and
probably wouldn't take kindly to a transfer except
in dire emergency Barbados, for Instance, is proud
of its title of •‘Little taigland’ and of the fact that

GRAND JURY WANTS STATE MKHIT SYSTEM
The Travis County grand jury issued a recommen-
dation the other day that deserve-, more than local
notice It urged that the Legislature establish a merit
system for State employes to end a "wild scramble
for spoils'' folowing each biennial election The jury
has been investigating alleged abuses and also check-
ed into the operation of present laws and found that
State workers engaged in political campaigns and
other practices that weren t for the best interest* of
the public
Most Texans are well aware of how the spoils
system works and Austin citizens are particularly
aware of tbe abuses that occur and the waste of the
taxpayers money that results The turnover of ex-
perienced State employes every two years alone is a
serious waste <rf money, and the using of State em-
ployers to ruiApolitical campaign^ is a double waste
It can hardly be expected that the office seekers and
tbe victors in elections would want to abolish tbe
spoils system The people who pay tbe taxes are
the only ones that can or will do anytiiing to elim-
inate this type of waste
