slides or electricity involved.
The Octapus Ride—eight arms
carrying two people each—will give
carnival patrons a good whirl for
their money.
The Bullet Ride which carries
[ eight persons Is another of the

The Tllt-A-Whirl, one of the tam-

carnival fans who want something
stimulating, yet not too much so.

Fair was first organised in 1910
and ran three times until 1912 It
was discontinued until 1930 and
has, since then, been an annual
affair with the exception of some
of the war years.
The president of the first Den-
ton County Fair was Dr. Jack
Skiles, a prominent Denton veteri-
narian. This year he was again
elected to serve a!
manager of the event.
This year preparations for the
fair are well underway and some
have been completed long before
the fair has been set to open on
Wednesday The fair grounds have
been carefully graded, the booths
set up, the departments tn a ma-
ture state of organization and the
entries are all in by now.
The number of entries show that
this fair will be one of the big-
gest ever staged. Nearly every ma-
jor department is filled and a
great majority of the minor de-
partments have many entries.
The fair ground* have more than
enough space for the large crowd
Included in the commercial ex-
hibitors are Harpool Seed House,
Sear*. Monroe Pearson, Rlney Bu-
tane, Fultz appliance. Armstrong
nursery. Denton Plumbing, Radio
Service Center and Evers Hard-
ware.
Unique in this year's fair will
be a grass exhibit. Grasses from
all parts of the county will be col-
lected and arranged In a grow-
ing display on the grounds. This
will probably be the only display
of Its kind over Texas and is ex-
pected to be a new innovation in
cattle country exhibits.
As to livestock the rules and
regulation* of the Livestock Sani-
tary Commission of Texas will ap-
ply at the fair.
A large portion of the depart-
mental exhibits of the fair will be
reserved for 4-H and FFA Club
boys and girls. This represents an
effort on the part of the officials
to further the work done toward
a progressive program of agricul-
tural education.
Actually in the regular division*
will go to club boys and girls.
The 4-H Club girls will have a
concession stand on the grounds.
As agriculture 1* the major busi-
ness in the nation so it Is with
Denton County It Is the econo
mlc basis of all business in the
county.
And a county fair Is a show win-
dow of this biggest business

Denton County Fair Set For
Gala Opening On Wednesday
By BOB rCNLKY
Becorrt-t'hronlcl* Start Writer
Th* big 1950 edlthm of th* Den-
ton County Agricultural Fair and
Rodeo wili blossom Wednesday in-
to a fiesta array of tents, cattle,
hogs, poultry, bucking bronc, ex-
hibit bootl.o. and wide-eyed chil-
dren.
.The fair will summon the ag-
riculture and art of all parts of
Etenton County from Pilot Point to
Bolivar to Justin to Lewisville.
The fair will reflect the richness
of Denton County, from the small
eat needlework display to the lar-
gest Angus bull. The exhibits will
represent the progress of the coun-
ty-progress that comes from hard
work and far-sighted planning.
And no one can question the
labor involved In raising a cham-
pion beef animal or in canning a
jgr of perfectly preserved fruit.
Since the days of the trail drives

®M* Denton County has been a
livestock area. Exhibits at the fair,
including the beef cattle depart-
ment and the dairy cattle depart-
ment will reflect the growth of
the county since then.

The Denton rodeo has thrilled
audiences with its riding acts all
through the summer. Some of the
fastest times in rodeo acts made
in this area have been recorded at
the rodeo. Most of the riding and
roping stock is in prime condition
for the last three shows—having
been worked all summer.
This portion of the old West will
provide another facet of entertain-
ment for fair patrons.
One of the most unusual exhi-
bits at the fair will be that brought
from the Gainesville Circus by
Verne Brewer who has already pre-
sented several speciality act* at
the rodeo.
Brewer will exhibit a pigmy ele-
phant and one of the largest steers
in Texas.
