If I had the necessary funds, I would

it very much if you can supply my re-

continue the Chronicle as a paper dedi-
cated to reporting things as they are in
the churches bf Christ and to comment-
ing intelligently on the way things ought
to be. —
Furthermore, I hope that we may
continue to see the cross-currents of
opinion on religious matters, both from
within and from without our brother-
hood.

Somebody has to sell those bonds. Too often, it
turns out to be the man who should be spending
all his time preaching, teaching and exhorting ...
the preacher.
Can you think of a better reason to consider a plan

require selling bonds? A time-saving (and

: Encouragement
Imprisioned
Editor, The Chronicle:
I received a copy of your fine pub-
lication today dated Aug. 18; although
I knew from Tom Hicks that an article
might appear I was surprised at the
length and clarity of it. »
As the article by minister Hicks
pointed out, I’m at the beginning of
a long sentence with no hope of parole
but I want to be baptized because I’ve
made my peace with God and I feel
freer than I’ve ever felt in my entire
life.- -
If possible, I’d like a few duplicate
copies of the Aug. 18 issue of the
Christian Chronicle so that I might send
it to a couple of relatives who haven’t
given up on me and also to a couple
of well-meaning state officials here in the
state of Arizona.

of Dudley Lynch from your staff. We
look forward to a continuation in the
near future of the vitally interesting kind
of newspaper which he edited.
We appreciate your support of a new
look in the Chronicle, in contrast to
the generally insular and deadening,
non-controversial quality of the paper
before you bought it.
I hope that the form letter that you
sent out asking for renewals of sub-
scriptions was not due to a failure to
update your materials.
In other words, 1 hope that you

tfte Chronicle and a complimentary life-
time subscription. For our readers, Car-
penter, serving time in the Arizona prison
for armed robbery, has been studying
with the minister at Coolidge, Ariz.,
Tom Hicks. Carpenter requested to be
baptized but prison officials will not
allow it. Hicks and other* interested
church members are petitioning to state
officials for permission to take Carpen-
ter to a nearby pond or to bring in a
portable baptistry. As of press time this
week, Carpenter has not been baptized.)

another publication’-it serves a lofty
task of helping all good things along ...
and should not hope we readers will
want the paper cluttered with reports
of troubles, telling it how it is—we
want good to be done and news of
that good. Let that which is evil among
us not be graced with space in a good
newspaper.
And let local elderships handle their
local problems—why blow them up and
spread them around by taking out of
their hands what is great difficulty to
them? Leave it as little as it is and as
local as it is—it is trash. You have holy
things to handle; and today, these are
many and neglected.
Speaking for one subscriber that has
had the Chronicle many years, 1 want
truth and realism about what is good,
and total silence about what is not
good. I do hope the Chronicle has not
been turiyd over to curing the ills
among us! ... or exposing them as
they are! still intend and will find it possible to
I’d be ashamed to have outsiders read
what has been published the past year—
it looks like all we do is have trouble.

Strength of character may be
acquired at work, but beauty of
character is learned at home.
There the affections are trained.
There the gentle life reaches us,
the true heaven life. In one word,
the family circle is the supreme
