The enchantment of the evening
deepened suddenly. Being Ohiok
Malloy’s partner was heady wtae.
He knew everyone, ho danced IUm
a dream, be had an infectflmie
gaiety and an Insatiable curtoalty
about Susan.
At midnight he had an Inspira-
tion. Why shouldn’t the four of
them go out and look over his
yacht? It was just back from war
duty with the Coast Guard and be
wanted to sje how its paint job
was coming ,
Charley was for it but Owen was
feverishly obstinate. She had a Bad
Cross meeting early tomorrow. Hte
didn’t Susan go? It was her last
night in town.
The •’Bteffy’’ was the final note
of glamour in a glamorous nigbt. A
handsome fifty-foot cruiser, the
kind of boat Busan had seen only
in movies. Drifting st anchor in
the moonlit river it seemed too per-
fect to be real. She said so as she
and Chick stood together at the
rail.
“Just what I thought about you.'*
said Chick Malloy, "at Fortlno’*
last night night. It took a bit of
doing to track down your plan*
for this evening and get old Collin*
to insist Desmond go over his
policy—’’
•You—”
“did that?”
Chick smiled down at her blithe-
ly. “It looked like a lean winter
before you came to town. Arabella,
but now I feel like going places
again.”
"Home for Instance,” laughed
Susan, "because I've a train to
catch back to Midvale to a job I
happen to be holding down.”
“A career woman.” groaned Chick.
"Okay. I’ll find you a job here that
won’t take up too much of your
time.”
He was still making plans and
Susan was still laughing at them
when he said good night at the
apartment door. Her laughter was
lilting with excitement, even as
she evaded his kiss and firmly shut
the door.
