nerve racking.** 7
This was a novel point of view
and one that made Doctor Ward *
do a bit of thinking. Naturally
the process of thinking Invdlved
much of the personality of bis
chauffeur.
And during the day, when at
home. It was difficult for Doctor
Ward to realize that in the small
flat above his garage was sleeping
such a lovely bit from the fem-
inine world who was in reality his
night chauffeur. He began to dis- ,
like intensely his day chauffeur
simply been true he wasn’t Doreen.
He also bon tn »)-—• that if his
patients must need him at all they
would not have him at night, and
then he fretted, because in that

The Rumseys are going vacationing.
The milk’s been stopped, the icoman, has i
been called off, and the Man Who Delivers
the Newspaper has been instructed to bring
no more until further notice. '
But the telephone will be left at home,
drawing full pay in an empty house I
Something should be done about this!
Vacation rates for idle telephones '
One solution (provided you’re planning
a vacation of 30 days or more) is to place
your telephone on vacation^-half-rates
while you are away.
It’s a convenient way to save money.
And—this to folks who sometimes have
their telephones taken out—it spares you
incon^pniencc on your return.
That’s because: ■ . ,
1. You pay just half the regular rate.
2. Service is reconnected qtfkkly after
you return—usually within 24 hours
after-you notify us.
3. You keep your present telephone
number. (You’d lose it if you had
your telephone removed!)
4. Your name remains in the telephone
book.
If you wish, while you are away we
will refer your calls to another telephone
—that of relatives, for instance.
Vacation rates arc available for periods,
of more than 30 days, but not over four
months.

His Pretty Night
Chauffeur
By DOROTHY DOUGLAS x
T)R. DONALD WARD left the en-
*-z gaging of a night chauffeur
to his sister Lily as he left the se- j
lecting of hia ties and the finding
of • suitable office. Donald was
a very busy and promising young
doctor.
Lily spent several days Interview-
ing workless drivers but somehow
the right one seemed not to have
applied. Lily felt that personality
had much to do with the success
of a driver as her hard-worked
brother was many times weary and
irritable during the drives between
one house of sickness and another.
He required a person who could
send forth a suggestion jff strength
and quiet. So many drivers were
ill tempered when called out of
their beds at nlgbt Donald must
have none of that.
When Doreen Mitchell applied—
being the first feminine chauffeur
to interview Lily—she. Lily, felt a
curious tugging at her heartstrings
coupled with hesitation about the
responsibility of engaging a girl
drives for Donald.
"But It’s all night work,” said
Lily to the fair but most capable
and healthy looking applicant
“You would have to be on duty
from eight-thirty at night untib
seven In the morning and occupy
the little flat above the garage.”
“I should love it all,” said Miss
Mitchell. "I mosf badly want a

work.* '4
The wistfulness in the girl’s eyes,
which somehow Lily attributed to
a recent unhappy love affair, and
a certain something at the
back of all feminine miads. which
might he called romance, prompted
Lily to engage Doreen for me
month’s trial.
‘i. "Twill not consult my brother,"
she said fraakiy, "as l am certain
he would not consent to having a
girt driver—at least for night work.
But—" Lily smi^d and Doreen’s
eyes lit up.
