of the First Marine Division, Rein-
forced landed on "The Island."
Marines have stormed dozens
of Ijeaches since August 7. liil.'.

to the men who launched Ameri-
ca's first counter-punch of Worl.l
War II there is only one liatMe-
ficld significantly termed '"Pie
Island"-Guadalcanal, the military
laboratory of the Pacific war.
Guadalcanal today is no longer
ft major military base: it is pri-
taarily an islpnrf of memories.
