AH the people of Ceylon, from babes
just “feeling’ theii1 feet'’ to old women,
their steps tottering on the brink of the
gravej wear gold and silver ornaments.
They even invent new places for carrying
them, and it is no uncommon thing to see
a Cingalese belle with the top of her ears
covered with gold plllte or wire, a large
pair of rings pendant from the. lobes of
the ear, a gold or silver circlet round her
hair, her nose adorned with rings, brace-
lets on her wrists, rings on her fingers,
and silver plates on her toes. This is the
perfection of adornment; but in one or
other of the fashions, or in several of
them, the Cingalese woman, of whatever
station in life is set forth. I saw running
out of a house, a sturdy little boy 2 years
of age, who had nothing on but a silver
key fastened round his waist by a girdle
of silver wire. The men take their pleas-
ure less expensively. They delight in
gold ear-rings and rings, but beyond this,
are content to intrust the recommenda-
tion of their personal appearance to a fine
tortoise shell comb of circular shape, set
on the crown of their heads, with the
ends towards the forehead. The meh
evidently pride themselves on their hair,
which is generally drawn back from their
forehead and tied in a neat knot at the
back. As they wear ear-rings, and not
always whiskers or mustache, it is not
easy at first sight to distinguish man or
woman.—[Good Words.

Alarming Prevalence of <J«e Disease
at tl»e present Day.
An article in the Times by’ Dr. Brude-
hell Carter on the influence of civilization
upon eyesight, discusses thecauses of de-
fective vision among the adults and chil-
dren of the present day. Dr. Carter says
that few things are more remarkable than
the imperfection of common knowledge
about all matters that relate to the use
and functions of the eye. One conse-
quence of want of knowledge about vision
is that the evolution of the eye has been
left to be the sport of accident. In run-
ning, in jumping, in rowing, in every' game
which requires skill, strength and endu-
rance, the young urban Englishman ex-
cels; but bis sight has been suffered to
decline in acuteness by’ sheer neglect; and
the conditions of his life have also pro-
duced two kinds of deformity of the eye-
ball—the short-sighted eye and the fiat
or hypermetropic eye, each of which con-
stitutes a serious deterioration in the or-
gans of the visual sense. Having ex-
plained the nature and causes ofhyperme-
tropia, myopia and astigmatism, Dr. Car-
ter mentions that Dr. Cohn, of Breslau,
in the years 1864 and 1865 examined the
eyes of 10,060 scholars and found 1,630 of
them with eyes of defective shape. Of
these, 1,072 were myopic, 139 were Hat-
eyed, 25 were the subjects of astigmatism
and 386 were suffering from the results of
previous disease. Dr. Cohn further found
that faulty’ shape of the eye-balls, especi-
ally' in the direction of myopia, increased
steadily, both in numerical prevalence
and in degree as school life was prolonged;
being less frequent and least pronounced
in the elementary schools, more frequent
and pronounced in the intermediate, most
frequent and pronounce 1 in the finishing
s hoolsj His researches hare since been
repeated and exten led by many other ob-
servers, and his results have been fully
confirmed in other parts of Germany, in
Russia, and in America; while the Ameri-
can observations have shown not only
that fiat eyes have a tendency, from the
strain thrown upon them by their defect,
to pass into the opposite condition of
short-sight, but also that this change oc-
curs with the greatest certainty’ in un-
healthy children, and in schools where
sanitary conditions are neglected. Dr.
Carter concludes by asking whether there
is any reason why' perfection of sight
should not be made a point of physical
excellence in all athletic contests. It
such a change was introduced a first effect
would be to make people understand why
they ought to be able to see. Important
good results would not be immediate, nor
could they' bo fully attained except in
more than one generation; but it cannot
be doubted that they would ultimately
follow.—St. James Gazette.

Pieces of Bone.
For four years I have been afflicted with a
very troublesome catarrh of the head. So
terrible has Its nature been that when I blew
my nose small pieces of bone would frequent-
ly come out of my mouth and nose. The dis-
charge was copious, and at times exceedingly
offensive. My blood became so impure that
my general health was greatly impaired, with
poor appetite and worse digestion.
Numerous medicines were used without
relief, until I began the use of B. B. B., and
three bottles acted almost like magic. Since
their use not a symptom has returned, aud y
feel In every way quite restored to health. I
am an old citizen of Atlanta, and refer to al-
most any one living on Butler street, and moro
particularly to Dr. L. M. Gillam, who knows
of my case. Mbs. ELIZABETH KNOTT.
A LITTLE GOLD.
Mr. Z. A. Clark, of Atlanta, Ga., in speaking
of $480.00 In gold, desires to say to the readers
of this paper, that the whole of the above
amount was spent In a fruitless effort in find-
ing relief from a terrible Blood Polson affect-
ing his body limbs and nose—presenting ugly
running ulcers. He is now sound and well,
having been cured by the most speedy and
wonderful remedy ever before known, and any
Interested party who may need a Blood Bu-
rliler will learn from him that three bottles of
B. B. B. restored his appetite, healed all
ulcers, relieved his kidneys, and added twenty-
one pounds to his weight in thirty days.

We have been handling B. B. B. only a few

Although a practitioner ofnear twenty
years, my mother influenced me to pro-
cure B. B. B. for her. She had been con-

hows after commencing B. B. B. I observ-
ed marked relief. She has just commenced

The use of one single bottle of B. B. B.

a quick cure, while others, if they cure at

The late Marchioness of Bute left a
large sum of money (about £15,000) to
trustees, who were directed to build sev-
eral houses on a piece of land at Colinton,
near Edinburg, w’liich were to serve as
homes for the poor Widows and orphans
of officers of the British or Indian armies.
The houses are to be occupied free of rent
and taxes, and they are to be kept in re-
pair by the trustees. Six excellent houses,
thoroughly well built, in a Very ‘pictur-
esque, old-fashioned style, have now been
completed, and each has a lawn in front
and a productive garden at the back. The
site is an excellent one, being within a
pleasant walk of Edinburg, and 500 feet
above the sea, at the foot of the Pentland
hills. Seven thousand pounds have been
expended in the work. The houses will
be known as the Lady Flora Hastings
homes, and they have been raised in
memory of that unfortunate and blame-
less lady by her sister.—[London Truth.

, Ague is cornmomly supposed to be due
to the entrance into the system of a mi-
asmatic organism. But uo microscopist
has ever seen this organism, neither can
we account for the intermittency of ague
paroxysms; nor can we say for certain
through what mediuih it findsan entrance
into the system. The majority of writers
hold the opinion that the air of marshes
is the sole cause of intermittent fever.
But there exists strong evidence going to
show that water, too, is a carrier of the
poison. Take, for for instance, two or
three cases cited in Lancet, and, at first,
the case recorded by Boudin, of three
vessels sailing from Algiers to Marseilles,
conveying 800 soldiers, who on shore
had all been exposed to the same atmos-
pheric conditions. Two of those vessels
were supplied with water, but the third
with water from a marsh. The two for-
mer arrived at Marseilles without a s’ck
man, but third ship lost thirteen men,
/ind had 120 sick, ninety-eight of whom
were affected with malaria* Again, there
Js the outbreak of ague at Tilbury Fort
^n 1872, cited in Parkes’ “Hygiene ”
where tljirty-four men out of a garrison
xif 103 were seized with ague, while the
people at the railway station and tl e
coast guard men and their families just
outside the fort entirely escaped. The
troops had been supplied with water stor-
ed jji tanks, collected from the rain water
iff 4ffe roofs, while the people outside ob-
