Harper Project Graduation 2003
and the Seniors of 2003 want to wish the student
body and everyone in the community a
Safe and Drug-Free Environment.
Project Graduation was created to provide an alcohol-free alternative
to the traditional drinking parties that seem to have become the accept-
ed form of celebration following high school graduation. The Seniors
will be celebrating their graduation night with an alcohol-free party
given by the Project Graduation Senior Parents. This party is made
possible by the support and donations given by our community and
surrounding businesses.

Sometimes, I can hardly under-
stand what everyone is sending
me on my e-mail! Why? It’s
because of all of that computer
lingo that just seems easier to
write. U C, I mean, you see, in
this generation of instant gratifica-
tion, it takes too long to write out
entire words. Take for instance
you are talking about going out on
a date with your boyfriend tomor-
row night at seven. If you are
telling your friend on the internet,
it would probably say something
like, “BF and I 2morrow nite @
7.”
Now that is actually a pretty
simple sentence. How about, “JIC
you forgot ILY?” In case you
aren’t as up to date as your com-
puter, that means, “Just in case
you forgot, I love you.” Now if
you just want to incorporate some
acronyms in your messages, try
using them to “spice” up your
writing. How about using “HAY’
in order to say, “How Are You?”
Or, if you are talking to your
friend about being sick, you could
say, “I hope you feel AGAN.” In
case you’re wondering, that
means you want them to feel “As
Good As New.”
What if you wanted to set some-
one up on a date with one of your
friends? You could say, “I know a
FOAF whose quality is HTF that
would like to take you out 2nite.”
Translated, that means, “I know a
Friend of a Friend whose quality
is Hard To Find that would like to
take you out tonight.” It gets real-
ly easy after you start using these
little shortcuts to incorporate them
into your e-mails and chats.

Text Twist — Sixth graders Jennifer Evan, Jennifer Coward, and Whitney j
Walker practice one of the most popular games with students right now.
The game like a computerized version of Boggle. —Staff Photo drobinson@omniglobal.net
One way to show what emotion
you want your message read with
is to use emoticons, which are the
symbols from a keyboard that
make up facial expressions. For
instance, “That joke was really
funny! :-)” The colon, hyphen and
end parenthesis made a smiley
face. There are lots of really cute
faces you can use to give your
notes personality. To find some
more of them, go to www.free-
warehof.org/acronyms.html to see
them.
There are a lot of ways to use
computer language and acronyms
in regular e-mails. I just think it
is better to not make them your
entire message or we’ll all just get
CBB (confused beyond belief).
Many kids spend their time on
computers just so they can play
games. I have discovered that my
favorite game is on
www.msngames.com. The name
of the game is Text Twist. The
computer gives you six letters that
are all scrambled up, and you
have to make words out of the let-
ters. You get points for each word
that you make. Another great site
for games is
www.candystand.com, which is
sponsored by Lifesavers.
“I like the Planters Slam Dunk
Contest on www.candystand.com
because it is competitive,” senior
RJ Ramos said.
There are a lot of other games on
other sites that are great, too.
“I like the game Snowcraft on
www.coffeebreakarcade .com
because I get to throw snowballs
at people,” freshman Charles
Opella said.
Computer games are a fun and
relaxing way to spend some extra
minutes either in class or at home.
I just hope that everyone does
not spend ALL of their time e-
mailing or playing games on the
web. ;-) By the way, that was a
wink at the end! LOL
