The letter above will distinguish
Junior College sportsmen from now
on if student approval is given, ac-
cording to President J. O. Loftin.
A change from the accustomed
“R” was suggested because that
letter identifies the team name and
not the school. The change would
conform to the practice of other
colleges, who use the school initial
as the athletic award.
The new letter would be of white
chenille with an orange background
of felt. The sport in which the
player is distinguished would be
indicated by a symbol on the lower
part of the “C.”

J. C Track Team Takes 7 Firsts,
Loses By 4 Points To Schreiner
A disputed hand-off in the 440-Yard Sprint Relay cost
the Jay see track team a victory at Schreiner Institute of
Kerrville last Saturday. The hill country college won the
practice meet 62-58.
Despite the questioned incident, the Rangers took 7 firsts
in 14 events.
Mert Carter was top point man,
taking first in the pole vault, high
hurdles and low hurdles, and third
in the high jump. He had a total
of 16 points.
Ross Youngs was second, taking
first in the 100-yard and 220-yard
dashes. His most outstanding feat
was the completion of the Sprint
Relay, in which he picked up a 10
yard deficit at the hand-off and
finished 10 yards ahead at the tape.
George Greene was third in line
with a first in discus and a second
in the Shot put. Jack Arnold,
though fifth in number of points,
chalked up a first for Jaysee in the
440-yard dash.
Others who placed were Clem
Curry, 6 points; Ray Lucas, Homer
Escamilla, and Marshall Deshler,
3 points each; Marvin Gustafson, 2
points; and Johnny Hancock and
Hugh Harris, 1 point each.
Youngs’ time of 10 seconds flat
in the 100-yard dash was a new
record for the fast ex-A 1 a m o
Heights star. Escamilla’s time of
10.2 was good for a second place.
Carter’s final height on the pole
vault was 11 feet, 3 inches. Second
was Lucas, who despite a lack of
practice, cleared 11 feet.

Basketball Team
Introduced At End
Of Playing Year
(By George Jackson)
The Ranger basketball team has
completed their schedule this year
and, although their percentage of
wins was not extra high, thanks is
due to them for for their fine work
and the never tiring efforts of their
coach. The Rangers this year played
all college competition with the
exception of a few local service
teams. In the next few paragraphs
the Ranger staff wishes to intro-
duce the first six players on the
team who did so much to put the
Junior College team on top.
Ray T. Lucas. Known better to
his friends as “Luke” he is the top
basketball player on the team this
year. Ray is five feet nine inches
tall and weighs about 150 pounds,
and has an average of 13 points a
game. A cagey player and a dead
eye for the basket, Ray is the most
talked about player on the campus.
Clayton Wall. Although at times
Clayton was unable to make some
games he is the highest scorer on
the J. C. team this year. He is a
sophomore, stands six feet tall, and
weighs 165 pounds. Wall had an
average of 17 points a game and is
a threat to any ball club when he
steps on the court. He played his
best game of the year against
Laredo Junior College scoring 29
points.
Charles “Chalky” Moerner. Along
with being Student Council presi-
dent and many other honors that
he has won, “Chalky” is the team’s
first string center. Moerner is six
feet one inch tall and weighs about
160 pounds, and although his
scoring average is not too high this
year he has been able to ^core in
every game that he has played
except one. “Chalky” is a hustler
and was always a stand-out on
defense.

feet one inch tall and weighs about
155 pounds. The tall guard scored
65 points all season and played his
best game against T. L. C., scoring
15 points. R. L. is a demon under
the backboards as the tall, rangey
player can match any six foot six
boy.
Jim Culberson. The only fresh-
man on the team, Jimmie has
acquired the names of “Cubbie” and
“Freshman Sensation.” “Cubbie”
is the youngest member of the
team being only 17 years old,
weighs 165 pounds and is five feet
eleven inches tall. Culberson al-
ways turned in a sterling game of
offense.
Gil Colesworthy. A major in
journalism and quite active in all
sports, Gil is the sixth man on the
basketball team this year. Gil is

6-4, 6-2; Higbie defeated Schero,

Escamilla defeated Whitis, 6-1,
