CHAPTER FIVE
The city morgue was a place
hitherto known to Ann fvqty
vaguely as an adjunct to the city
hospital, where she had done
nurse's aid duty. The big charity
hospital occupied a very long
block in one of the slummier sec-
tions of Midland City, and as Ann
made her way through the grimy,
smelly streets in the brisk spring
sunshine that made everything
look even dingier, she felt a little
sick.
"A stiff they pulled out of the
river this morning.”
She shivered as she heard Tfa-
. cy Driscoll saying that.
He had been so slckeningly sure
she would refuse the assignment!
She had seen it in his eyes. He
was deliberately trying to make
-her run up a white flag and
quit, so that he could get his girl-
friend out of the classified ads
department and into the city
room. , . •
She drew a deep breath and
made herself walk up the steps,
but at the top she collided with a
man hurrying out of the building
and for a moment they rocked,
and the man’s arms steadied her.
and then the man looked down at
her A till, blend, pleasant-loook-
ing man in his very early thir-
tles, an expensive 'camel’s hair
coat topping a well-tailored dark
suit, setting off a really superla-
tive silkeh scarf.
// "Well, if t isn’t little Annie,
t the joy of my heart!” the young
man greeted her exuberantly,
“What, In Heaven’s name, are you
doing here thia morning, angel-
face?”
Ann elung to him, almost sob-
i Mng.
“Oh, Lyn Frazier! Am I glad to
see you?" she choked.
Lyn was pleased and eager, but
a little dazed.
, "No foolin'?” he asked i
' tlously. ‘.‘It’s a heck of a time
and a spot, but I hate to waste
; such' a golden opportunity—dar-
ling. will you marry me?” J
Ann laughed unsteadily, and
straightened and said, "Of course
not, Idiot—aren t you afraid to fco
, around propositioning all your
gal-friends like that or don’t you
taw there’s malt-power short-
; age? Somebody will take you se-
• rlously one day, and will you be
scared!”
“Ah, but I don't proposition all
my gal-friends--only you!” Lyn
assured her warmly. "And I live
for the day when you'll take me
seriously. Or—just take me, pe-
riod!"
Ann said gratefully, “You are
sweet, Lyn—but I’m mueh too
fond of yon to marry you"! But I
am so darned glad to see you!"
"Well, any morning at eleven-
thirty, you’ll find me right here
and can be glad--If the idea ap-
peals.” suggested Lyn lightly. "I
have clinic hours here from nine-
thirty until eleven thirty — or
cruldn't you be expected to re-
member that?”
"Of course—I guess I was up-
set—I forgot—"Ann broke off
and Lyn asked’curiously, "What
the dickens ire you. doing here,
by the way, being upset and for-
getting?”
"An assignment," Ann said and
the little thrill of the words helped
to steady her. "I’m working, as
of this morning, on the Courier,
and my first assignment has to do
with a story about a dead .man
—found in the river this morn-
ing--”
Lyn was frowning, his blue eyes
flashing with anger. ~ _
“Who the levil ever sent you to
the city morgue bn ahy such sto-
ry as that, Ann? That’s routine
stuff that always goes in over the
telephone, unless there are un-
usual circumstances. If Jerome
sent you out on any such story,
T’l) nail his hide to his office
wall!” he said furiously.
Ann felt soothed and comforted
byLyn^nmgTr,—but she said
quickly,o "It was Tracy Driscoll,
the new city editor. And he
thinks I'm a softie and can’t take
it He’s trying to make me quit,
so he can give my job to his girl-
friend let’s nail his hide to his
cau- office jvall. Lyn!" She laughed a
little.
"You’re going through with It?"
asked Lyn.
"But of course," she answered
him promptly. "How do I go
about it.?"
Lyn took h$r 6y the shoulders,
turned her about, marched her
down the steps and across
street to "a littls resteU;n»t
did a thriving trade among
nurses and internes, and occasion-
al worried families of City Hospi-
tal patients. -
"You go about getting your
story,” Lyn told her inside the
little restaurant, by marching
your pretty «elf right over there
to that table and waiting while I
go to see Jim! Sit tight, and I’ll
be right back with all the dope
