Boesch’s awards were won
over a wide period of combat
experience in the E. T. O. In
France on his first day of eom-
193-h bat, Boesch won the Silver Stqr
' j for moving forward, auck^arry-
ing one of his badly wounded
" to safety although a litter
bearer through fire had teen
killed making the attempt.
Boesch succeeded in getting 4h0
man to safety and that night or-
ganized and led a patrol deep
into enemy territory and safely
evacuated four wounded men
left behind during a withdrawal.
Later in Luxembourg Boesch
led a patrol into the Siegfried
Line to gain information and
although he was wounded by
mortar fire he continued on the
patrol until the mission was com-
1 plete and the information sought
obtained. For this he was award-
led the Bronze Star and the Pur-
ple Heart.
. In Germany in the attack on
the to^n of Hurtgen, Boesch led
the leading assault company
across 700 yards of open ground
that was swept by enemy ma-
chine gun fire and plastered
with artillery and mortaf fire.
In the bitter street fighting thht
followed he completely disre-
garded enemy fire and by count-
less examples of personal cour-
age inspired his men to the cap-
ture of the town although his
badly decimated unit was heavi-
awarded a second' Silver Star. He
also acquired a Cluster to his
Purple Heart tor a wound ac-
quired during the fighting -that
day. ‘
