The price of a smoke, the baby's
niik and a bus ride to work went
up in scattered sections of the na-
fion tudav.
A new round of price increases
vas reported, and it was accom-
panied by continued reports of!
hoarding or scare-buying in some |
tn;a.-.
Die retail tobacco dealers of:
America said smokers would have
i.i pay an extra penny a puck for
cigarettes in the wake of the R. J. j
i„ ym.ids Tobacco Company's an-1
mmcement that it would boost'
amels and Cavalier cigarets from
tn per thousand.
1 P. .). Lorrilard Co. said its Old
1 eil.is probably would go up. too.
In Chicago, some smoke shops
upped prices one cent to 22 cents
i pack today.
Milk price boosts were announc-
•i New York, New Jersey and
t'hicago. Bowman Dairy of Chi-
cago said it would raise its price
mie-half cent a quart next Tues-
ay. A one-cent incerAse was or-
dered by Bordens milk and Shef-
field Farms in New York and
New Jersey.
Meanwhile, St. Louis D>y Goods
wholesalers reported "panic" buy-
ing by the retailers was depleting
stocks of sheets, pillow- cases, ny-
lon hoisery and bolts of cotton
goods.
La inborn and Co., a leading New-
York sugar broker, appealed to
grocers to sell only one pound to
a customer. The firm said house-
wives would hoard "one to two
million tons o# sugar" if permit-
ted.
At Elkins, W. Va., a supermark-
et reported that it sold 27,000
pounds of sugar during a three-
hour blitz by frantic housewives.
A store official said that equalled
three pounds for every man, wo-
man and child in the city.
A federal reserve report indica-
tes that the Dallas district led the
nation in scare-buying. Depart-
ment store sales for the week of
July 15 were up Ml) per cent over
a year ago, compared with 24 per
cent nationally.

Some Blind Are

AUSTIN, July 27. (U.R:—Some
blind Te.xans are defrauding some
xul'.ible citizens with appeals for
contributions to train guide dogs.
That warning comes from Lon
Alsup, director of the state com-,
mission for the blind, who says
there is no recognized agency or'
organization in Texas which trains
R-74:7. The blind solicitors who:
have been working in the state are •
not representatives of any reliable .
