.. .From the pastor
NOT LATER—NOW
It is an irrevocable axiom. We have so little time to do so much. There are some
opportunities that flash on the screen of our lives for an instant, and then are gone. In
the final month of the 2(fh century, w dealt with fourteen families who lost loved ones.
There was great variety in the deaths. They were young and elderly, well-known and
obscure, from large clans and virtually alone. But a common thread ran through all of
them, as it does through the millions of other deaths that occur annually throughout the
world.
Their deaths ended any chance for brightening their days with good words or deeds.
While death brings pain, it also should bring wisdom. While we can, we must bring
some sunshine to the lives of those we touch regularly. A bright greeting, a compliment,
a hug, a cheap but thoughtful gift—these are among the “points of light” we ought to
offer on a regular basis. It is nine days into the new century now. It is not too late to
establish for ourselves a sunshine regimen. You don 7 have to be a party animal or a
radiant personality to spread sunshine. But all of us can improve in the way we speak to
those closest to us. We can do better in the way we think of an encouraging word for
family members, for co-workers (especially those subordinate to us who think we do not
appreciate them), for hassled waiters, waitresses, salespeople. We can learn how to talk
to children so we do not intimidate or frighten or demean them. We can come up with
ways to be warm to strangers and people remote from us.
While we have people with us, before we have to make up eloquent lies about them at
their funerals, we can brighten the comer where we are. That is better than resolving to
lose enough to get into your wedding dress or the tuxedo you wore in 1975.
Life is short. Time is precious. Let's be thoughtful while we still can.
