THE LORD IS LISTENING TO YOU
Thanks to a bit of a prod by the deacons, especially Chairman Maurice Carr, we went into
a month of prayer for guidance in the development of a Christian Life Center. Almost as
soon as we entered the month of October, we knew that God was listening to our prayers
(did we ever wonder about such a thing?). You have taken hundreds of the little October
booklets of prayer-meditations, and from your responses, have found them helpful in the
overall regimen of prayer. The first two Prayer Vigils have been well supported, and we
have remained concentrated on God's leadership in the people and the facility. Last
week's revival, with powerful sermons by Rev. Cosby, remind us that we are incredibly
blessed with our own home team. (How can haute cuisine from the expensive restaurant
compare with Big Mama's Thanksgiving layout? We don't have to do a national search—
God has poured out His holy fire right here at Wheeler; Hallelujah!) And we are hearing
from you that your fast days are not easy to endure, but that they help you to focus in
prayer. And even before the month is over, it is crystal clear that God is blessing us—
right now!
THANKS, LOYAL SLAVES!
That's what Paul calls himself in Romans 1:1. It is even what he says Jesus became in
Philippians 2:7—our Bible uses the softer term "servant," but the original word is doulos,
"slave." To all who worked in last week's revival and in the Prayer Vigils, thank you! It
was not convenient work, but as did Jesus and His apostle Paul, you glorified God. There
is no better work you can do—and as God is glorified, the people of God are edified.
Good work!
DON’T EXALT THE UGLY THIS MONTH
October, the month of prayer and of revival, is also the month of Hallowe'en. Children
are excitedly looking over costumes and movies and TV shows guaranteed to frighten.
What a paradox, that as we begin this month glorifying God, we should end it paying
tribute to ghosts and monsters, ultimately to the Prince of Evil, Satan himself. Our
Children's Ministry provides for us all the fun of October without its macabre, evil, and
occult side. They will put on again this year the annual Harvest Festival, on Friday,
October 27, from 6:00 to 9:00 p. m. They should come in costume, but not as 'Scream' or
Darth Vader, or with a hideous Frankenstein monster mask; but as a favorite Bible
character. Games and prizes, puppet shows and entertainment, food and sweets—all here
on the church grounds. Come to Harvest Festival a week from this Friday, then stay at
home while others risk the dark streets of Houston 'trick-or-treating,' and glorifying the
wrong spirits. You'll be glad your kids made the better choice. Let's end October as we
began it—exalting the Name of the Lord!
