The edge was taken off what had'
expected to be a shocking day in
court when McDonald, acting on
oiders of Kings County Judge Sa-
muel Leibowitx, pencilled out all
the names in the testimony ex-
cerpts which he brought to court.
Prefacing hi* reading of the
question and answer testimony of1
tlross, with a short speech to the
court, McDonald described the
bookmaker as "monarch of a large
criminal empire."
"Inherent in each of Gross's
pleas of guilty is an admission of
bribery and official corruption—
corruption that was a part of his
trade," McDonald said.
The dapper, slick-haired hook-
maker, dressed in a bright blue
suit, sat in court as McDonald read
the damning testimony. Gross's re-
fusal to tell that story on the wit-
ness stand in Kings County court
last week had crossed up the
Brooklyn district atorney and col-
lapsed the case against 1«> present
and former policemen accused of
splitting $1,(KM,i,(Hi yearly in bribes
I from Gross.
The district attorney brought in-
to special sessions court today the
digest of Gross's grand jury testi-
mony. The betting czar was up for
sentencing on his guilty plea to li."

Is Sent To Jdi
NEW ORLEANS. Sept. 27.
—Joseph Pretto, alleged racing
new* service operator, today w_ns
under a six month jail sentence for
contempt of Congress.
The rotund head of the Southern
News Association ofet-
News Service was given the sen-
tence and a #500 fine for refusing
to answer 2ti questions before the
Kefauver Crime Committee hear-
ings in New Orleans last winter.
Defense Attorney Eugenu Stan-
ley asked the court to take in con-
sideration the fact that Poretto
counts of bookmaking and one of
conspiracy.
McDonald had received permiss-
ion to disclose the grand jury tes-
timony to Justices William B.
, Northrop, Alfred J. Hofmann, and
| Thomas E. Morrissey, Jr., to aid
them in pronouncing sentence.
But at a press conference short-
ly before court convened. Leibow-
, itz announced that McDonald had
! agreed with his decision that it
; would be manifestly unfair and
1 unAmcriean for the name or nam-
j es, or incidents or information,
which would make possible to id-
entify any person named by Gross
when hi- testified" to be made pub-
lic.
had never been convict'd i r)
lonv or misdemeanor. He -....i he
would appeal the sentence.
"Unless some penalty is n.po.^d
in this case," said Federal .ludee
J. Skelly Wright, "other w %
