“Tarzan” Sees
Real Thing At
Jungle School
A PACIFIC ISLAND BASE (U.E)
Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of
the famous "Tarzan of the Apes."
recently inspected the Jungle
Training Center in the company of
Col. W. C. Saffai rans, commanding
officer, Atlanta, Ga., and expreas-
ed himself as thoroughly convinc-
ed that even Tarzan could learn
some lessons from Col Saffarrans’
experts
While winding.through the hills
and valleys of the Training Center,
Mr. Burroughs echoed the sentl--
ments of the Army Chief of Staff,
Gen. JMjirsha'l, who inspected- Ute
Center some weeks ago, after a
35,db0-mile trip. Gen. Marshall
said, “This is the finest thing I
have seen during the entire trip.”
Col. Saffarrans, who received
his indoctrinating Ln this type of
work in Tennessee in -the Ranger
choot there eome months ago, ex-
plained? to Burroughs that whye
the training has been carried on
for only a short while, that many
thousands of men had reecived its
benefits. He also outlined the over-
J all plan, which is to train every
' man in "Jungle Training" before
he pnters the combat area.
Word of the arrival of Tarzan's
creator was spread rapidly through
the student groups and the men
outdid themselves in showing Mr.
Burroughs the results of their
training in jungle lore. Climax of
the trip was at ttre “Jtmg!ie-i3V*-
“ng’”^1Hs, where Isf'Lt. JafflHs r
McCann, Plainfie’.d, N- J., showed
Mr. Burroughs that if you know
how, jungle living is not only
