There being no other matter to come before the meeting
for consideration and discussion, an adjournment was called
at 9:40 p.m.
the possibility of improving the method of handling the
classwork. Mr. Keilin, Chairman of the Board of Education
gave quite a detailed explanation of the present methods
used, the problems being faced and the difficulties being
met with in finding a proper solution. He assured those
present that everything was being done toward creating a
greater interest in the school and improving the methods used.
It was his thought that it would be some two to three years
before any new methods introduced would show results, although
it was his hope that something to this end would be accomplished
sooner. He stated that another meeting of the Board of
Education would be held shortly to consider the arrangements
of the school for its betterment. In the discussion which
followed, Mr. Mandel stated that the Jews of the City should
have some kind of an educational Institution of this type, even
though it meant divorcing this form of education from the
Congregations, so that all children should have the opportunity
of receiving correct education at the proper times. He felt
that a more up-to-date system should be installed to bring
this into effect and that this Congregation should institute
something along these lines for the Jewish children of the city
and that regularly organized classes should be arranged for
each phase of learning to include also reading and writing.
Mr. Keilin in reply, asked that specific expressions from the
members would be of great interest to the Board. The Chair
felt that proper classes whereby each child could be correctly
graded and graduated according to their studies, should be
instituted. It was Mr. Harry Paine’s thought that that the
parents should be contacted and Urged to give this subject
more consideration, it being his feeling that the parents in
most cases were not giving this the attention it deserved.
He thought they should be made to realize that such a great
responsibility was theirs. After some further discussion, it
was concluded to leave this matter for handling by the Board
of Education.
Mr. Mandel asked whether arrangements for High Holydays
had been made, and was advised by the Chair that these had
been taken care of for some time past, with the proper parties
charged with their duties.
