me
I
r
Center, Texas,
Dear Santa Claus:.
I have been a god boy this
year, and I want you to bring
me an indoor baseball, a knife,
nuts, fruits and all kinds of
fireworks.
Don’t forget the other little
boys and girls.
Your friend,
James H. Pate, Jr.
?
Dear Santa Claus:
Wil lyou please bring me a
doll bed, some fruit, candy
and nuts. Please remember,
the little boys and girls who
have no mother and dady.
Lots of love from,
Billie McLendon.
P. S.—You need not bring
the doll dresser that I wanted
----------
chairs, some dishes to go on
it, a doll and just anything
else.
My stocking will be at the
foot of my bed. We don’t
have a fireplace. I have a
little brother this Christmas,
he is big enough to play with
a rattler.
Lots of love,
Peggy Elaine Woodfin.

car and tractor and some fruit

who lam my nick-name is
“Blackie.”
Best wishes,
James Nix.
P. S.—Don’t forget my
baby sister, Jean. She wants
a rattler.

PAINTED SHIPS
The Lufkin News whimsically offers tender condolence
to Congressman John C. Box because that modern Don
Quixote has had his big windmill taken away from him by
District Attorney John Valls of Laredo who has success-
fully drawn the lime-light of Mexican relations on himself.
The difference between John Box and John Valls lies
in the great divide which separates earnest allegiance to
the cause of the people and insincere political camoflage to
hide lacking congressional qualities. John Box is sly enough
to know that he must ever cloud the skies with an issue or
too many of his supporters will become dismayed at his utter
lack of enterprise.
Valls conscientiously objected to legal immunity for
Plutarco Calles because, being a true officer, he scorned the
idea of allowing a bit of prestige to become a loophole
through which an alleged conspirator might escape. The
fact that Valls was rebuked by Secretary of State Stimson
does not necessarily condemn his action; to the contrary,
it proves obviously that the State Department supported
Calles for diplomatic reasons and not because it condoned
his efforts to beat the law.
The political career of John C. Box recalls to us the
admirable lines of the poet who in an inspired moment said:
As still as a painted ship on a painted ocean.”

WE BELIEVE IT A RECORD
“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus . . . . ” That is
if Virginia O’Hanlon, now grown old and gray, will take
the word of hundreds of Shelby County children who have
made it possible, for the Center Daily News to establish
what is believed to be a record for Santa Claus letters for
small daily papers.
Since the first appeal for letters nearly two weeks ago
the News has been swamped to such an extent that import-
ant features have been shelved in order that the childish
expressions might have space for publication. Each mail
has flooded the office with letters. No exact count has been
made but it is believed that over five hundred letters have
come to the News directed to the Kriss Kringle.
A few more days remain for children everywhere to
make public their Christmas wants in the News columns.
This is to notify those who ha ve not done so to write their
letters immediately for none will be accepted for publication
after Monday, Dec. 23, at which time the forms will close
and only Christmas advertising and news will be given
recognition.
