How many times have you walked
around campus and seen a recycling bin?
If the district cares so much about
that the cost" to maintain the program the environment, why aren’t they
outweighs the revenue received, but recycling plastic and aluminium and
recycling plastic and aluminium and
they do it out of concern for the envi- glass?
ronment, which should be the reason
individuals and businesses, recycle.
The college is setting the right exam-
ple for students by recycling, but more
could be done.
The college recycles only paper
products, and most months, the dis-
campus location that serves alcohol is
proposterous.
A district policy that went into
effect Dec. 19, 1990, forbids students
from possessing or using alcohol at
district-sponsored activities on and
off campus. The policy does not
forbid students from sponsoring an
activity at venues where alcohol is
sold; we just can’t drink during the
activity.
Students go to college to learn how to
become responsible adults. Trustees and
district administrators should remember
that well more than half of our popula-
tion has already gotten there.

Editorials
New values don’t add to our education
Choosing the top five values from
a list of 15 possibilities seems as fruit-
less as selecting just a few morals from
Aesop’s Fables to adhere to, yet this
college has made doing so a priority
simply in pursuit of an award.
For the sake of easy memoriza-
tion, only five will make the cut, and
whatever happens to those that do not
remains to be seen.
Among the 15 proposed values on
the ballot, sent to every employee to
vote on, are items such as excellence

Palo Alto College EMT Coordinator Jennifer Nottingham’s name was mis-
spelled In the April 13 issue of The Ranger.
Also a photo cutline on Page 25 incorrectly identified a student ascend-,
ing the Army’s rock climbing wall. The student was mathematics sophomore
Georgina Rice.

By installing additional recycling
bins in the cafeteria in Loftin, they
could be doing so much more.
The college also should consider
educating students on what can and
should be recycled. Clearly labeling
_________ recycling bins around campus would
trict offices contribute the most recy- help as well. If all of the above is done,
cling. That could be because not recycling will eventually become a
many people on the college campuses habit, and the students at this college
know about the district’s recycling c--------- ----------------------- —
program.
Revisit alcohol policy for older students
Keeping college students from spon-
soring events at venues where alcohol
is served is like asking children to be
on their best behavior in church.
The average age of college students
on this campus is 25 years old, well
above the legal drinking age.
In fact, according to the college
Fact Book 2005-06, 53 percent of stu-
dents are 22 or older. And that doesn’t
include those who are already 21. The
district is right to prohibit drinking by
any student who is representing this
college at an event.
But the idea that student groups are
not allowed to host an event at an off-
success and a positive outlook.
Well, what kind of school values low
standards?
But our students? Our employees?
These are not values, though they
should be valued by the institution.
Values such as integrity and courte-
sy should be practiced by every student
and employee at this college, regardless
of whether they make the top five.
This college has been around since
1925. Shouldn’t our values already be
in place? Maybe if the administration <
in everything we do, integrity, high focused on our values instead of a pro-
standards of performance, courtesy, cess, we would already have received
our students, our employees, student the Baldridge Award.
District needs to expand recycling efforts
The college has a recycling program
in place to recycle paper only.
The college also has made it clear
