According to a survey conducted
by a University of Wisconsin psy-
chology class, here’s approximately
the way Father Time swings his
scythe and slices up the average per-
son’s 70 years:
20 years working.
20 years sleeping.
7 years walking and outdoor sports.
7 years taking in movies and other
amusements.
5 years shaving and dressing.
2% years eating and sitting at the
table.
2% years smoking and chewing
gum.
2 years playing cards and other
games.
1 year on the telephone.
3 years just waiting for someone to
arrive.
The Bel Air Sport Coupe—one of 14 new Fisher Body beauties in three new series.
Can’t you tell just by looking that Chevrolet and General Motors
have come up with a completely new idea about the low-priced
car? The idea is this: to build a car that offers the very newest
thing in styling, the most modern features, the finest kind of per-
formance and the highest quality of manufacture—all at a modest
price. It’s something that took a lot of doing and that only the
world’s leading car builders could do. Everything’s new in this
Motoramic Chevrolet from its lower top right down to its tube-
less tires. Come in for the most fascinating visit you ever made to
an automobile showroom!

Pronounced mechanical advances
plus new riding comfort and a com-
plete re-styling of bodies give Chev-
rolet for 1955 its most spectacular
model announcement.
No major part of the car has been
overlooked in the broadscale im-
provement program. Driving ease
and riding comfort benefit along with
the creation of fresh automotive de-
sign. The accomplishment, says the
company, has been possible only be-
cause of a thorough job of product
re-engineering and the tremendous
new plant facilities Chevrolet adds
this year.
The 1955 models went on display
at dealers showrooms nationally to-
day. From an extraordinarily long
list of new features the public will
see at this time, these are particular-
ly outstanding:
1. First automobiles in the low-
price field to reflect the “dream car”
influence of the General Motors Mo-
toramas. All roofs have been visibly
lowered with a corresponding reduc-
tion in hood and belt lines to accen- I
tuate a longer, fleeter appearance. I

The bore is said to be unusually
large for an engine of the “Turbo-
Fire V8’s” length. The combustion
chamber is wedge-shaped to provide
virtual total combustion of fuel fed
by double-throated carburetor.

2. First V8 engine offered on a
Chevrolet in 35 years. Profiting by
recent research in combustion and
manufacturing techniques, the V8 is
unveiled as “far more precisely built
and efficient in performance than
others in its class.” Named the
“Turbo-Fire V8,” the V8 delivers 162
horsepower.
3. Higher horsepower ratings and
new quietness and smoothness in two
“Blue Flame” sixes. A 123-horse-
power engine is available with the
manual gearshift. The six built ex-
clusively for the Powerglide auto-
matic transmission now develops 136
horsepower.
4. Integrated body and frame de-
sign. Chevrolet points out it has
been able to obtain close unity with
body and frame by engineering com-
ponents to complement each other.
An important reduction in vibration
has been-effected and weight saved.
The frame is more rectangular and
twist-resistant. With a scientific re-
positioning of mounts and the utmost
application of rubber insulation, the
body is isolated from road shocks to
an unusual degree.
5. Front and rear suspensions re-
vamped. Added riding comfort and
road-ability, Chevrolet states, are as-
sured by vastly improved suspen-
sions. At the front, a modern ver-
whose car, careening down the wrong-
side of the road, struck headon an-
other car and killed its woman driv-
er. The county attorney charges-
him with “murder with an automo-
bile” and says he warrants so severe
a charge because at the time of the
collision he was “in a depraved and
deranged state of mind due to his
drinking.—Christian Science Moni-
tor. •
You can choose from
two new sixes, too!
Chevrolet also offers the last word in
six-cylinder performance and economy!
There’s a new "Blue-Flame 136” teamed
with Powerglide and a new "Blue-Flame
123” with either standard transmission
or Overdrive.

.................o
sion of the ball-joint design aids car
handling and steering as well as com-
fort. One improvement new to the
industry is a control arm geometry
that cancels out most of the objec-
tionable “dive” that often accompa-
nies brake stops. The suspension al-
so applies a new1 and more durable
light-weight bearing material while
the design decreases lubrication
points from 16 to 4. Rear suspension
improvements include leaf springs
nine inches longer to an overall
length of 58 inches. For stability,
rear spring mounts are outside the
frame, after the fashion of the Chev-
rolet Covette.
6. Increased safety through greater
visibility. Every car window of saf-
ety glass—front, rear and side—is
larger in 1955 Chevrolet bodies.
7. Optional overdrive. An over-
drive installation will be offered for
the first time.
8. More electrical power. A 12-
volt electrical system will furnish
ample reserve power for the ever-
growing demands of accessories.
9. “Dry Air” ventilation. This fea-
ture involves an arch-shaped plenum
chamber that channels fresh air
from a slotted cowl vent. Drainage
from the chamber prevents any water
from reaching passengers, even in
rainiest weather.
Now Chevrolet, the leading builder of
valve-in-head engines, introduces the
"Turbo-Fire V8.” It carries the V8 design
to a new high in efficiency with its high
horsepower (162), high-compression (8 to
1), high performance and surprisingly high
gas mileage. Available with standard trans-
mission, or with the extra-cost options of
Overdrive or Powerglid.e.
10. Tubeless
safety.
11. Smoother power application.
The torque tube drive is replaced by
a “flatter” ride in combination with
the longer springs.
12. Easier steering.
Most distinguishing mark of the
new Chevrolet bodies is their low-
slung silhouette and vertical wind-
shield pillars. Broad, flat hood and
trunk lids are approximately three
and one-half inches lower than last
year while the high, straight crown
of the fenders enhances an impres-
sion of fleetness and agility. The de-
sign gives the cars the appearance of
much greater length although wheel-
bases remain unchanged.
A result of years of research and
hundreds of thousands of miles of se--
vere testing, the valve-in-head V8
carries a compression ratio of 8 to 1
and a displacement of 265 cubic
inches. The engine is exceedingly
compact with a bore of 3.75 and a
stroke of 3 inches.
Although Chevrolet has had V8s
under experiment since it tried out
this design in 1917-19, the “Turbo-
Fire V8” entails basic re-design in
the last three years. Engineers
sought the compactness of a short
crankshaft with the power of large
displacement._____________ i______
