undressed, she was consumed

Her pent-up emotions broke loose

Then, gradually, as she grew
calmer, cold determination took
possession of her. She wasn’t go-

Mont's lips tightened. "So you’re
throwing that up at me? I knew
you would some day.” He made a
homeless gesture. "Certainly it’s

"Oh, Mont!”
“Ws might as well have a show-1
down right now," he went on grim-'
ly. "If jiving in your home puts
you in a position to the
terms of our marriage, then we’ll
leave Fleetwood, and I’ll make the
home. We’ll go where I can save
what little pride I have left.”
At that inopportune moment,
Aunt Sue came into the room.
"Supper's ready," she annouheed :

How long she lay there in the
darkened room, she didn't know.
Finally, she heard some one on
the Stairs. Mont! She sat up on
the edge of the bed.
A few minutes later, Mont's fig-
ure was silhouetted in the door-
way. He switched on the light and
stood there looking at her.
Then, he smiled diffidently. "I’ve
just come from the barn. It’s
snowing heavily. Looks like a bad
night.”
She didn’t answer. Did he think
he could pass off their quarrel by
talking as though nothing had
happened ?“
He crossed the room and sat
down beside her. "I guess you've

he attempted to put his arm about
her shoulder, but she jerked away.
